Die Maori-Bewohner des kleinen neuseeländischen Küstenortes 'Whangara' führen ihre Herkunft auf den Urahnen Paikea zurück, der - wie es die Legende besagt - einst auf dem Rücken eines Wales von Hawaii nach Neuseeland kam. Seit über tausend Jahren trägt in jeder Generation ein männlicher Nachfahre des Walreiters diesen Titel und ist Oberhaupt des Stammes. Doch als die Zeit für den neuen Erben kommt, stirbt der Hoffnungsträger bei der Geburt und nur dessen Zwillingsschwester Paikea (Keisha Castle-Hughes) überlebt. Stammesführer Koro (Rawiri Paratene) will seine Enkelin nicht als Nachfolgerin akzeptieren und versucht, unter den Jungen des Clans einen Anführer zu finden. Aber das mutige Mädchen lehnt sich gegen überkommene Traditionen auf und kämpft leidenschaftlich um ihre Bestimmung, Anerkennung und die Liebe ihres Großvaters...
Die Hauptdarstellerin von Niki Caros 'Whale Rider' (2002) nach der Romanvorlage von Witi Ihimaera, Schauspielerin Keisha Castle-Hughes, erhielt für ihre Rolle im Alter von gerade einmal 13 Jahren (!) eine Oscar-Nominierung in der Kategorie 'Beste Hauptdarstellerin'.

The Maori inhabitants of the small New Zealand coastal town of 'Whangara' trace their origins back to the ancestor Paikea, who - as legend has it - once came from Hawaii to New Zealand on the back of a whale. For over a thousand years, a male descendant of the whale rider has held this title in every generation and is the head of the tribe. But when the time comes for the new heir, the bearer of hope dies in childbirth and only his twin sister Paikea (Keisha Castle-Hughes) survives. Tribal leader Koro (Rawiri Paratene) does not want to accept his granddaughter as his successor and tries to find a leader among the boys of the clan. But the courageous girl rebels against outdated traditions and passionately fights for her destiny, recognition and the love of her grandfather...
The leading actress of Niki Caro's 'Whale Rider' (2002), based on the novel by Witi Ihimaera, actress Keisha Castle-Hughes received an Oscar nomination in the category 'Best Actress' for her role at the age of just 13 (!).
