Achtzehn Monate sind vergangen, seit Jack Bauers (Kiefer Sutherland) Frau ermordet wurde. Seine Tochter Kimberly (Elisha Cuthbert) will nichts mehr von ihm wissen; von seiner Arbeit bei der 'CTU', der Anti-Terror-Einheit des CIA in Los Angeles, ist er beurlaubt. Bis er einen Anruf des US-Präsidenten höchstpersönlich erhält. Er soll zu einer geheimen Besprechung in sein altes Büro kommen. Der Grund: Terroristen planen einen Anschlag, bei dem innerhalb der nächsten 24 Stunden eine Atombombe in Los Angeles explodieren soll. Jack kann sich der CTU nicht länger verweigern. 08:00 - 09:00 Uhr: Ein dringender Anruf des US-Präsdenten ruft den beurlaubten CTU-Agenten Jack Bauer auf den Plan. Eine unvorstellbare Katastrophe droht: In den nächsten 24 Stunden soll in Los Angeles eine Atombombe explodieren.
09:00 - 10:00 Uhr: Während Jack versucht, sich in eine Gruppe von Terroristen einzuschleusen, bemüht sich Kim, Megan von ihrem gewalttätigen Vater wegzubringen. Unterdessen hat die junge Kate das Gefühl, dass mit dem Verlobten ihrer Schwester etwas nicht stimmt.
10:00 - 11:00 Uhr: Kim geht zur CTU. Sie weiß nicht, dass Terroristen schon unterwegs sind, um das Gebäude in die Luft zu jagen. Mason, der einen Hinweis über die Bombe erhalten hat, durchkämmt ein Industriegebiet am Stadtrand. Ein verhängnisvoller Fehler...
11:00 - 12:00 Uhr: Mason kehrt in die CTU zurück - und muss erkennen, dass er eine Entscheidung getroffen hat, die ihn das Leben kosten kann. Während Kim Megan nach einem Anfall ins Krankenhaus bringt, stellt Jack verblüfft fest, wer die Männer mit dem Anschlag auf die CTU beauftragt hat.
12:00 - 13:00 Uhr: Auf einen Hinweis aus der CTU hin begibt sich Tony zum Haus der Warners, um Reza zu verhören. Jack überzeugt Mason in der CTU, ihn Nina Myers verhören zu lassen. Nina will nur reden, wenn der Präsident sie begnadigt.
13:00 - 14:00 Uhr: Präsident Palmer will, dass die Wahrheit vorerst nicht an die Medien gelangt. Doch offenbar handelt jemand seinen Anweisungen zuwider. Kim schleust Megan aus dem Krankenhaus heraus. Unterdessen gibt Reza geheime Informationen an Tony weiter.
14:00 - 15:00 Uhr: Palmer geht Sherrys Behauptung nach, Mitglieder seines Regierungsstabs würden ein Komplott schmieden, um das Präsidentenamt an sich zu reißen. Eine Polizeistreife hält Kim, Megan und Miguel wegen zu hoher Geschwindigkeit an - und macht im Kofferraum ihres Autos einen grausigen Fund.
15:00 - 16:00 Uhr: Während ihr Vater und Reza in der CTU verhört werden, nutzt Kate die Gelegenheit und durchsucht die Computerdateien ihres Vaters. Nina weigert sich, Jack zu verraten, wo die Bombe ist. Dann zerreißt der Knall einer Explosion die Stille - ihr Flugzeug stürzt vom Himmel.
16:00 - 17:00 Uhr: Als Jack und Nina am Absturzort des Flugzeugs unter Feuer geraten, richtet Nina eine Waffe auf Jack. Mason weiht Tony in seine Situation ein. Er schlägt vor Reza und den Vater seiner Verlobten gegeneinander auszuspielen, um herauszufinden, wer mit den Terroristen paktiert hat.
17:00 - 18:00 Uhr: Nachdem ein Scharfschütze der CTU Nina entwaffnet hat, macht Jack eine Entdeckung: Kamen die Kommandos am Absturzort im Auftrag der National Security Agency? Reza erhält von seiner Verlobten Marie eine tödliche Überraschung.
18:00 - 19:00 Uhr: Jack und Kate begeben sich gemeinsam auf die Suche nach Syed Ali. Unterdessen versuchen Tony und Mason herauszufinden, wer Reza umgebracht hat. Präsident Palmer beauftragt einen Folterexperten damit, Roger Stanton über die Bombe zu befragen.
19:00 - 20:00 Uhr: Jack informiert Kate über Maries Beteiligung an den terroristischen Plänen und bittet sie, ihm bei der Suche nach ihrer Schwester zu helfen. Lynne, die Pressereferentin des Präsidenten, erfährt von Sherys Verbindung zu Stanton.
20:00 - 21:00 Uhr: Als Jack die Bombe auf einem Flugplatz findet, offenbart Stanton, dass ein Sondereinsatzteam der Bombe schon seit Wochen auf der Spur ist. Ein zurückgezogener Abenteurer macht sich Kims Ängste zunutze, um sie in seinen Atombunker zu locken.
21:00 - 22:00 Uhr: Während Jack Marie über die Bombe ausfragt, will Palmer wissen, was es mit Sherrys Beteiligung an Stantons Plänen auf sich hat. Mason, dessen Kräfte rapide schwinden, übergibt die Verantwortung für die CTU offiziell an Tony.
22:00 - 23:00 Uhr: Der Präsident versucht herauszufinden, ob die Tonbandaufnahme eines Gesprächs über den Bombenanschlag echt ist. Während Jack das kleine Flugzeug mit der Atombombe in die Wüste bei Los Angeles steuert, hat er noch einmal die Gelegenheit, mit Kim zu sprechen.
23:00 - 24:00 Uhr: Jack, den Mason unter Einsatz seines Lebens gerettet hat, kehrt in dem Moment in die CTU zurück, als Syed Ali erschossen wird. Sollte dieser Mord verhindern, dass die Wahrheit ans Licht kommt? Jack ist entschlossen zu beweisen, dass das Tonband gefälscht ist.
24:00 - 01:00 Uhr: Jack und Kate stehlen sich aus der CTU davon. Sie wollen einen Mann treffen, der angeblich einen Chip besitzt, mit dem sich die Unechtheit des Tonbands beweisen lässt. Der Präsident inst entschlossen, seine Kriegspläne nicht weiter umzusetzen, bis er von Jack gehört hat.
01:00 - 02:00 Uhr: Auch als sein Informant bei einem Überfall erschossen wird, bleibt Jack bei seiner Überzeugung, dass das Tonband eine Fälschung ist. Während Kate sich der Polizei stellt, muss Präsident Palmer auf die wachsende Unruhe in der Bevölkerung wegen der Bombenexplosion reagieren.
02:00 - 03:00 Uhr: Jacks Versuch, die Kommandos loszuwerden, die sie angegriffen haben, schlägt fehl: Er selbst gerät in ihre Gewalt, und Kate muss einer neuen Gefahr ins Auge sehen. Lynne erfährt von einem Komplott im Weißen Haus: Jemand versucht, Präsident Palmer in Verruf zu bringen.
03:00 - 04:00 Uhr: Während ein verängstigter Arzt Jack zu Hilfe kommt, versucht Kate den Computerchip von ihren Angreifern zurückzuhalten. Präsident Palmer wird misstrauisch: Vizepräsident Prescott reagiert nicht auf seine Anrufe...
04:00 - 05:00 Uhr: Präsident Palmers Verdacht erhärtet sich: Prescott bittet ihn zu einer geheimen Unterredung. Eine Information auf dem Datenchip führt Jack zu Alex Hewitt: der Person, die den Chip programmiert haben könnte
05:00 - 06:00 Uhr: In Hewitts Apartment begegnet der schockierte Jack Bauer niemand anderem als Sherry Palmer. Während er versucht, mit Hewitt zu verhandeln, entlässt Chappelle Tonyy aus seiner Verantwortung bei der CTU. Tony trifft eine folgenschwere Entscheidung.
06:00 - 07:00 Uhr: Jack zwingt Sherry Palmer, ein Treffen mit Peter Kingsley, dem Drahtzieher hinter der Fälschung des Tonbands, zu arrangieren. Tony und Michelle landen im Arrest, weil sie Anweisungen nicht befolgt und mit Jack zusammengearbeitet haben.
07:00 - 08:00 Uhr: Wird es Jack gelingen, Kingsley in letzter Minute auszuschalten? Auch das Weiße Haus setzt alle Hebel in Bewegung: Die Fliegerangriffe im Nahen Osten müssen gestoppt werden, bevor es zu spät ist.

Eighteen months have passed since Jack Bauer's (Kiefer Sutherland) wife was murdered. His daughter Kimberly (Elisha Cuthbert) doesn't want to know anything more about him; he is on leave from his work at the 'CTU', the CIA's counter-terrorism unit in Los Angeles. Until he receives a call from the US president himself. He is supposed to come to his old office for a secret meeting. The reason: Terrorists are planning an attack in which a nuclear bomb is to explode in Los Angeles within the next 24 hours. Jack can no longer refuse the CTU. He agrees to undercover investigations to track down the attackers. What he doesn't know yet is that they are in cahoots with the person who destroyed his life a year and a half ago.

9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.: While Jack tries to infiltrate a group of terrorists, Kim tries to get Megan away from her violent father. Meanwhile, young Kate has the feeling that something is wrong with her sister's fiancé.
10:00 - 11:00 a.m.: Kim goes to CTU. She doesn't know that terrorists are already on their way to blow up the building. Mason, who has received a tip about the bomb, combs through an industrial area on the outskirts of the city. A fatal mistake...
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.: Mason returns to CTU - and has to realize that he has made a decision that could cost him his life. While Kim takes Megan to the hospital after a seizure, Jack is amazed to discover who commissioned the men to attack the CTU.
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.: Following a tip from the CTU, Tony goes to the Warners' house to interrogate Reza. Jack convinces Mason at CTU to let him interrogate Nina Myers. Nina only wants to talk if the president pardons her.
1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.: President Palmer wants the truth not to reach the media for the time being. But apparently someone is acting contrary to his instructions. Kim smuggles Megan out of the hospital. Meanwhile, Reza passes on secret information to Tony.
2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.: Palmer investigates Sherry's claim that members of his government staff are plotting to usurp the presidency. A police patrol stops Kim, Megan and Miguel for speeding - and makes a gruesome discovery in the trunk of their car.
3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.: While her father and Reza are being interrogated at CTU, Kate takes the opportunity to search her father's computer files. Nina refuses to tell Jack where the bomb is. Then the bang of an explosion breaks the silence - their plane crashes from the sky.
4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.: When Jack and Nina come under fire at the crash site of the plane, Nina points a gun at Jack. Mason lets Tony in on his situation. He suggests playing Reza and his fiancée's father off against each other to find out who made a pact with the terrorists.
5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.: After a CTU sniper disarms Nina, Jack makes a discovery: Did the commandos at the crash site come on behalf of the National Security Agency? Reza receives a deadly surprise from his fiancée Marie.
6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.: Jack and Kate go together in search of Syed Ali. Meanwhile, Tony and Mason try to find out who killed Reza. President Palmer commissions a torture expert to question Roger Stanton about the bomb.
7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.: Jack informs Kate of Marie's involvement in the terrorist plans and asks her to help him find her sister. Lynne, the president's press officer, learns of Shery's connection to Stanton.
8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.: When Jack finds the bomb at an airfield, Stanton reveals that a special operations team has been on the trail of the bomb for weeks. A reclusive adventurer takes advantage of Kim's fears to lure her into his nuclear bunker.
9:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.: While Jack questions Marie about the bomb, Palmer wants to know what Sherry's involvement in Stanton's plans is all about. Mason, whose powers are rapidly dwindling, officially hands over responsibility for the CTU to Tony.
10:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.: The president tries to find out if the tape recording of a conversation about the bombing is genuine. While Jack steers the small plane with the atomic bomb into the desert near Los Angeles, he has another opportunity to talk to Kim.
11:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.: Jack, whom Mason saved at the risk of his life, returns to the CTU at the moment Syed Ali is shot. Was this murder intended to prevent the truth from coming to light? Jack is determined to prove that the tape is fake.
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 a.m.: Jack and Kate steal away from the CTU. They want to meet a man who allegedly has a chip that can be used to prove the inauthenticity of the tape. The president is determined not to continue his war plans until he hears from Jack.
01:00 - 02:00: Even when his informant is shot during a robbery, Jack remains convinced that the tape is a fake. While Kate turns herself in to the police, President Palmer has to react to the growing unrest in the population because of the bomb explosion.
02:00 - 03:00: Jack's attempt to get rid of the commandos that attacked her fails: he himself falls into their power, and Kate has to face a new danger. Lynne learns of a plot in the White House: someone is trying to discredit President Palmer.
03:00 - 04:00 a.m.: While a frightened doctor comes to Jack's aid, Kate tries to hold back the computer chip from her attackers. President Palmer becomes suspicious: Vice President Prescott does not respond to his calls...
04:00 - 05:00: President Palmer's suspicions are confirmed: Prescott asks him for a secret interview. A piece of information on the data chip leads Jack to Alex Hewitt: the person who could have programmed the chip
05:00 - 06:00 a.m.: In Hewitt's apartment, the shocked Jack Bauer meets none other than Sherry Palmer. While trying to negotiate with Hewitt, Chappelle relieves Tonyy of his responsibilities at CTU. Tony makes a momentous decision.
6:00 a.m. - 7:00 a.m.: Jack forces Sherry Palmer to arrange a meeting with Peter Kingsley, the mastermind behind the forgery of the tape. Tony and Michelle end up in arrest for not following instructions and working with Jack.
07:00 - 08:00: Will Jack succeed in taking out Kingsley at the last minute? The White House is also pulling out all the stops: the air strikes in the Middle East must be stopped before it is too late.
