Dallas, 1985. Der Cowboy Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey) führt ein exzessives Leben auf der Überholspur. Rodeos, Alkohol, Koks und Frauen bestimmen seinen Alltag. Als Woodroof wegen einer Schlägerei im Krankenhaus landet, eröffnet ihm der Arzt nach einer Routineuntersuchung, dass er HIV-positiv ist und nur noch 30 Tage zu leben hat. Die Welt des homophoben Texaners bricht zusammen - für ihn ist es unfassbar, dass er sich mit dieser 'Schwulenkrankheit' infiziert haben soll. Nachdem ihm das von seiner Ärztin Dr. Eve Saks (Jennifer Garner) verschriebene, einzige legale Medikament 'AZT' mehr schadet als nutzt, sucht er nach Alternativen. Ron wird in Mexiko fündig und beginnt, die in den USA illegalen Medikamente im großen Stil ins Land zu schmuggeln. Um sein Geschäft noch lukrativer zu machen, lässt er sich auf einen Deal mit dem homosexuellen Rayon (Jared Leto) ein. Gemeinsam gründen sie den 'Dallas Buyers Club', durch dessen kostenpflichtige Mitgliedschaft man unbegrenzten Zugang zu den Präparaten bekommt. Mit dem Geschäft ihres Lebens entsteht nach und nach eine besondere Beziehung zwischen dem ehemals rücksichtslosen Hedonisten und dem sensiblen Homosexuellen. Der Club wird in Windeseile landesweit bekannt und die Medikamenten-Flatrate findet bei Rons und Rayons Leidensgenossen reißenden Absatz. Mit dem Erfolg gerät die Organisation allerdings schnell ins Visier der 'FDA', der 'Food and Drug Administration'. Denn die Gesundheitsbehörden sind, ganz im Sinne der Pharmaindustrie, nicht gewillt, das rentable Geschäft mit den Kranken aus den Händen zu geben. Ron beschließt, sich gegen das System zu stellen und nicht nur für das Recht der Kranken, sondern für das Leben zu kämpfen...
'Dallas Buyers Club' erzählt die wahre und außergewöhnliche Geschichte eines Mannes, der sich vom hedonistischen und homophoben Cowboy zu einem mutigen und lebensbejahenden Aktivisten wandelt. Regisseur Jean-Marc Valée ('C.R.A.Z.Y. - Verrücktes Leben', 'The Young Victoria') ist es eindrucksvoll und ohne Pathos gelungen, Ron Woodroofs Kampf gegen die Behörden spannend und emotional mitreißend zu inszenieren. Indem er mit viel Feingefühl auf die verschiedenen Facetten dieser Geschichte eingeht, ist ein Film entstanden, der weit mehr als die nach wie vor hochaktuelle AIDS-Problematik behandelt. 'Dallas Buyers Club' erzählt von Zivilcourage, Kampfgeist, Toleranz und Menschlichkeit - ein Film, der Mut macht. Matthew McConaughey ('Magic Mike', 'Der Mandant', 'The Wolf of Wall Street') wird mit dieser großartigen Leistung als Ron Woodroof sein Image als seichter Romantic-Comedy-Darsteller endgültig los. Dallas, 1985. Cowboy Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey) leads an excessive life in the fast lane. Rodeos, alcohol, coke and women determine his everyday life. When Woodroof ends up in the hospital because of a fight, the doctor reveals to him after a routine check-up that he is HIV-positive and has only 30 days to live. The world of the homophobic Texan collapses - for him it is inconceivable that he should have been infected with this 'gay disease'. After the only legal drug 'AZT' prescribed by his doctor Dr. Eve Saks (Jennifer Garner) does him more harm than good, he looks for alternatives. Ron finds what he is looking for in Mexico and begins to smuggle the drugs, which are illegal in the USA, into the country on a large scale. To make his business even more lucrative, he agrees to a deal with the homosexual Rayon (Jared Leto). Together they found the 'Dallas Buyers Club', whose paid membership gives you unlimited access to the preparations. With the deal of her life, a special relationship gradually develops between the formerly ruthless hedonist and the sensitive homosexual. The club becomes known nationwide in no time at all and the medication flat rate is sold by Ron and Rayon's fellow sufferers. With its success, however, the organization quickly becomes the target of the 'FDA', the 'Food and Drug Administration'. Because the health authorities, in the interests of the pharmaceutical industry, are not willing to give up the profitable business with the sick. Ron decides to stand up to the system and fight not only for the rights of the sick, but for life...
'Dallas Buyers Club' tells the true and extraordinary story of a man who transforms from a hedonistic and homophobic cowboy to a courageous and life-affirming activist. Director Jean-Marc Valée ('C.R.A.Z.Y. - Crazy Life', 'The Young Victoria') has impressively and without pathos succeeded in staging Ron Woodroof's fight against the authorities in an exciting and emotionally rousing way. By dealing with the various facets of this story with great sensitivity, a film has been created that deals with much more than the still highly topical AIDS problem. 'Dallas Buyers Club' tells of civil courage, fighting spirit, tolerance and humanity - a film that gives courage. Matthew McConaughey ('Magic Mike', 'The Client', 'The Wolf of Wall Street') finally gets rid of his image as a shallow romantic comedy actor with this great performance as Ron Woodroof. 'Thirty Seconds To Mars' frontman Jared Leto ('Alexander', 'Requiem for a Dream', 'American Psycho') also shines in his role as the homosexual Rayon. Both actors went to their physical limits for their performance and were honored at the Hollywood Film Awards (McConaughey: Hollywood Best Actor Award, Jared Leto: Hollywood Breakout Performance Award). The outstanding cast is prominently complemented by Golden Globe winner Jennifer Garner ('Juno', 'Catch Me If You Can'), Denis O'Hare ('The Good Wife', 'Duplicity') and Steve Zahn ('A Perfect Getaway', 'Sunshine Cleaning'). Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto were awarded for their performances in 'Dallas Buyers Club' at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards in the categories 'Best Actor - Drama' and 'Best Supporting Actor - Drama' and finally rewarded with the 'Oscar' 2014 for Best Actor and Supporting Actor.
