Justin Cobb (Lou Taylor Pucci) ist 17 Jahre alt und eigentlich ganz normal, sieht man davon ab, dass er immer noch Daumen lutscht. Sein kleiner Bruder findet ihn deswegen peinlich, sein Vater Mike (Vincent D'Onofrio) streitet ständig mit seiner Mutter Audrey (Tilda Swinton) darüber, eine Freundin hat Justin auch nicht, dafür aber tief sitzende Selbstzweifel. Als ihn der Kieferorthopäde und New-Age-Hobbypsychologe Dr. Perry Lyman (Keanu Reeves) mittels Hypnose von seiner Obsession befreit, wird jedoch nichts besser. Denn der Daumen war nur ein Ventil für Justins Unsicherheit und sein Lehrer Mr. Geary (Vince Vaughn) offenbart sich als genauso verunsichert wie Justin. 'Thumbsucker' (2005) von Regisseur Mike Mills ist ein echtes Highlight des amerikanischen Independent-Kinos, voller Wahrheit und stiller Komik, getragen von einem hervorragenden Darstellerensemble um Tilda Swinton, Vincent D'Onofrio, Keanu Reeves, Vince Vaughn und nicht zuletzt Newcomer Lou Taylor Pucci, der für seine erste Hauptrolle gleich mit dem 'Silbernen Bären' der Berlinale und auf dem Sundance-Filmfestival mit dem Spezialpreis der Jury ausgezeichnet wurde.

Justin Cobb (Lou Taylor Pucci) is 17 years old and actually quite normal, apart from the fact that he still sucks thumbs. His little brother finds him embarrassed because of it, his father Mike (Vincent D'Onofrio) constantly argues with his mother Audrey (Tilda Swinton) about it, Justin doesn't have a girlfriend either, but he has deep-seated self-doubt. When orthodontist and New Age amateur psychologist Dr. Perry Lyman (Keanu Reeves) frees him from his obsession by means of hypnosis, however, nothing gets better. Because the thumb was only an outlet for Justin's insecurity and his teacher Mr. Geary (Vince Vaughn) reveals himself to be just as insecure as Justin. 'Thumbsucker' (2005) by director Mike Mills is a real highlight of American independent cinema, full of truth and quiet comedy, carried by an excellent ensemble of actors around Tilda Swinton, Vincent D'Onofrio, Keanu Reeves, Vince Vaughn and, last but not least, newcomer Lou Taylor Pucci, who was awarded the 'Silver Bear' at the Berlinale for his first leading role and the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
