Ryan (Gregory Lay) ist Schauspieler, wohnt im New Yorker 'East Village' und steht eigentlich auch sonst mitten im Leben. Während einer Drehpause springt der hippe Mittdreißiger in den nächsten Zug aufs Land, um seinen Cousin Hudson (David Neal Levin) zu besuchen, der zurückgezogen in einer Kleinstadt lebt und seine Tage am liebsten im Bademantel verbringt. Eigentlich ist Hudson ein liebenswerter Kerl, allerdings mag er selten andere Menschen, fährt Autorennen um dem Wohnzimmertisch und kann auch sonst seine Umwelt mit allerhand irritierenden Angewohnheiten zur Verzweiflung treiben. Mit Ryan scheint er sich jedoch gut zu verstehen, und ehe sich der smarte Großstädter versieht, sitzt er mit Hudson und der unbekümmert lebensfrohen Zufallsbekanntschaft Sunrise (Mary Catherine Greenawalt) im klapprigen Auto, um die Asche von Hudsons Mutter unter einem alten Kirschbaum in der ländlichen Einöde zu begraben. Und wie es sich für einen solchen seltsamen Roadtrip gehört, geht schon von Beginn an so einiges gehörig schief. Es wird eine lange Reise werden...
Sean Daniel Cunninghams 'Bei der Asche meiner Mutter' alias 'Hudson' (2019) hat Spaß mit den ausgefallenen Ideen seiner drei ungleichen Protagonisten und fühlt sich ähnlich an wie eine sonntägliche Autofahrt an einem sonnigen Herbstnachmittag - ein vor Lebensfreude funkelndes Feelgood-Movie, erfrischend unkonventionell und doch bestechend in seiner drollig lakonischen Weltsicht. Oben drauf als Sahnehäubchen: einer der entspanntesten und emotionalsten Indie-Soundtracks der letzten Jahre.

Ryan (Gregory Lay) is an actor, lives in New York's 'East Village' and is actually in the middle of life in other ways. During a break in filming, the hip man in his mid-thirties jumps on the next train to the countryside to visit his cousin Hudson (David Neal Levin), who lives in seclusion in a small town and prefers to spend his days in a bathrobe. Actually, Hudson is a lovable guy, but he rarely likes other people, races cars around the living room table and can also drive those around him to despair with all kinds of irritating habits. However, he seems to get along well with Ryan, and before the smart city dweller knows it, he is sitting in a rickety car with Hudson and the carefree fun-loving chance acquaintance Sunrise (Mary Catherine Greenawalt) to bury Hudson's mother's ashes under an old cherry tree in the rural wasteland. And as befits such a strange road trip, a lot goes wrong right from the start. It will be a long journey...
Sean Daniel Cunningham's 'At My Mother's Ashes' aka 'Hudson' (2019) has fun with the unusual ideas of its three disparate protagonists and feels similar to a Sunday car ride on a sunny autumn afternoon - a feel-good movie sparkling with joie de vivre, refreshingly unconventional and yet captivating in its droll laconic worldview. On top of that, as the icing on the cake: one of the most relaxed and emotional indie soundtracks of recent years.
