Max Bialystock (Nathan Lane), ein durchtriebener Theaterproduzent und einst König des Broadway, der jetzt allerdings nur noch Flops produziert, und sein farbloser Buchhalter Leo Bloom (Matthew Broderick) hecken gemeinsam den perfekten Plan aus, ein Vermögen zu unterschlagen: Sie treiben für ihre nächste Produktion, einen todsicheren Misserfolg, weit mehr Geld auf als eigentlich nötig wäre, um die Show auf die Beine zu stellen. Und da keiner der Finanziers erwarten wird, sein investiertes Geld wiederzusehen, wollen die Produzenten die Differenz anschließend in die eigene Tasche stecken. So weit, so gut. Was dem gerissenen Duo jetzt noch fehlt, ist das ultimativ schlechteste Stück aller Zeiten. Das glauben sie mit dem Musical 'Springtime for Hitler' gefunden zu haben, das der entflohene Nazi Franz Liebkind (Will Ferrell) geschrieben hat. Für die weibliche Hauptrolle engagieren die beiden Produzenten die schwedische Sexbombe Ulla (Uma Thurman). Am Premierenabend kann eigentlich nichts mehr schief gehen - oder doch? Gegen alle Erwartung wird die Produktion ein Riesenhit! Und für Max und Leo fangen die Probleme erst richtig an...
