Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) wollte einmal Architekt werden. Den Glauben daran hat er verloren, nicht aber an die Liebe. Als unerschütterlicher Romantiker träumt er von dem größten aller Gefühle und der bezauberndsten aller Frauen, die sie auslösen und erwidern wird. Und dann steht sie plötzlich vor ihm, mit großen blauen Kulleraugen, die alles zu versprechen scheinen. Und dann doch nichts einlösen. Zunächst zumindest. Am 8. Januar ist Summer-Anfang und für Tom geht die Sonne auf. Aus den Wolken, dem Flieger entstiegen, taucht Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel) als neue Assistentin seines Chef in einer Besprechung auf, und schon ist Toms Radar auf den zauberhaften Neuzugang eingestellt. Doch der junge Mann, der als Autor für Gruß- und Glückwunschkarten stets die passenden Worte finden kann, bleibt stumm. Bis Summer am 11. Januar zu ihm in den Aufzug steigt und das Schweigen bricht. Er hört gerade 'The Smiths', die sie schon immer liebte. Das muss Bestimmung sein, da ist Tom sich völlig sicher. 'Ich liebe alles an Summer' schwärmt er bereits nach diesem zarten Erstkontakt seinen Freunden McKenzie (Geoffrey Arend) und Paul (Matthew Gray Gubler) vor. Doch Tage später, genauer gesagt am 22.Tag der Summer-Saison, ist alles vorbei. Glaubt Tom jedenfalls. Ernüchtert erklärt er den Freunden das vorzeitige Scheitern seiner Lebensliebe. Gefragt hat er Summer, wie ihr Wochenende gewesen wäre. 'Es war gut' hat sie ihm geantwortet. Für ihn Beweis genug, dass sie Tom in ihrem Leben nicht braucht und es vielleicht sogar einen anderen gibt. Auch hat sie im Büro nie auf seine ausgesendeten Signale reagiert. Nicht einmal auf 'The Smiths', die doch auf seinem Computer nur für sie spielten. Sechs Tage später durchbricht ein kleiner Lichtstrahl die dunklen Wolken. Beim Karaoke-Abend der Firma singt die Angebetete Sinatras 'Sugar Town' und Tom ist wieder hin und weg. Doch schnell wird es wieder bitter. 'Ich will keinen Freund, ich will nur Spaß und das ernste Zeugs für später aufheben' gesteht ihm Summer. 'Was aber geschieht, wenn du dich verliebst?' fragt Tom geknickt. 'Ist mir noch nie passiert, also vermisse ich auch nichts'. Einige Songs und Biere später hat Tom den Summer-Stop akzeptiert. Nur Freunde, das ist ab jetzt der Deal. Am nächsten Morgen im Büro kopieren sie gemeinsam. Als Freunde. Doch plötzlich bricht sie die Abmachung. Summer küsst Tom und verschwindet dann wortlos. Und so scheint sich Toms Traum von der großen Liebe tatsächlich zu erfüllen. Auch wenn Tom Summer nicht durchschauen und sie die Beziehung zu ihm nicht in seinem Sinn benennen kann. 'Es macht Spaß mit dir, aber etwas Ernstes suche ich nicht' sagt sie einschränkend und zeigt ihm eines Abends, wie viel Spaß er mit ihr wirklich haben kann. Sex mit Summer, Tom schwebt über den Wolken. Wildfremde Menschen begrüßen ihn, tanzen mit ihm auf der Straße des Glücks. Die Summer-Festspiele beginnen, und alles ist Harmonie. Sie outet ihren Liebling unter den Beatles, er seinen Lieblingsplatz in Los Angeles. Schließlich nimmt sie ihn erstmals mit zu sich, erzählt, was sie noch niemandem vor ihm anvertraute. Tom ist überzeugt, dass das ein Geständnis ihrer Liebe ist. Doch keiner von beiden spricht es aus. Er nicht, weil er ihre Abweisung fürchtet. Sie nicht, weil sie ihrer Gefühle nicht sicher ist. Dann, am 259. Summer-Tag, kollidieren Romantik und Realität erneut. Sie versteht nicht, warum er in einer Kneipe für sie eintrat und den aufdringlichen Typen, der sie anmachte und ihn verspottete, niederschlug. 'Wir sind doch nur Freunde!' zündet sie schließlich die Lunte, die ihn explodieren lässt. Wütend weist Tom sie über den Unterschied zurecht, den sie offensichtlich nicht empfinden kann. Stunden später kommt sie im strömenden Regen zu ihm und entschuldigt sich. Es ist eine wunderschöne Versöhnung und der Auftakt zu einem Neubeginn. Für beide und vielleicht auch gemeinsam. Sie werden sich verlieren und wiederfinden, traurig sein und das Glück neu entdecken, bis Toms Träume und Toms Wirklichkeit endlich im Einklang sind. Am 500. Summer-Tag, der eine neue Jahreszeit und eine andere Zeitrechnung einleitet.

But days later, more precisely on the 22nd day of the summer season, everything is over. At least that's what Tom thinks. Disillusioned, he explains to his friends the premature failure of his love of life. He asked Summer how their weekend had been. 'It was good,' she answered him. Proof enough for him that she doesn't need Tom in her life and that there may even be someone else. Nor did she ever react to his signals in the office. Not even on 'The Smiths', who played only for them on his computer. Six days later, a small ray of light breaks through the dark clouds. At the company's karaoke night, the beloved sings Sinatra's 'Sugar Town' and Tom is blown away again. But it quickly becomes bitter again. 'I don't want a boyfriend, I just want to have fun and save the serious stuff for later,' Summer confesses to him. 'But what happens when you fall in love?' asks Tom, crumpled. 'Never happened to me, so I don't miss anything'. A few songs and beers later, Tom has accepted the summer stop. Only friends, that's the deal from now on. The next morning in the office, they copy together. As friends. But suddenly she breaks the agreement. Summer kisses Tom and then disappears without a word. And so Tom's dream of great love actually seems to come true. Even if Tom can't see through Summer and she can't name the relationship with him in his sense. 'It's fun with you, but I'm not looking for anything serious,' she says restrictively and one evening shows him how much fun he can really have with her. Sex with Summer, Tom floats above the clouds. Complete strangers greet him, dance with him on the street of happiness. The Summer Festival begins, and everything is harmony. She outed her favorite among the Beatles, he his favorite place in Los Angeles. Finally, she takes him with her for the first time, tells what she has never confided in anyone before him. Tom is convinced that this is a confession of their love. But neither of them says it. He doesn't, because he fears their rejection. She doesn't, because she's not sure of her feelings. Then, on the 259th day of summer, romance and reality collide again. She doesn't understand why he stood up for her in a pub and knocked down the pushy guy who turned her on and mocked him. 'We're just friends!' she finally lights the fuse that explodes him. Enraged, Tom reprimands her about the difference, which she obviously can't feel. Hours later, she comes to him in the pouring rain and apologizes. It is a beautiful reconciliation and the prelude to a new beginning. For both and perhaps together. You will lose yourself and find yourself again, be sad and rediscover happiness until Tom's dreams and Tom's reality are finally in harmony. On the 500th day of summer, which ushers in a new season and a different era.
