Mutig tritt er für die Lehren Martin Luthers ein, aber während sich letzterer von den Volksmassen abwendet, wird Müntzer zu ihrem aktivsten Fürsprecher. Doch auch er kann die schicksalhafte Niederlage nicht abwenden...
Die DEFA drehte das Filmepos 'Das Leben und Schicksal des Pfarrers Thomas Müntzer' 1956 mit Wolfgang Stumpf als Thomas Müntzer, Ruth Maria Kubitschek als Bärbel Buss, Margarete Taudte als Ottilie von Gersen, Wolf Kaiser als Schwabenhannes, Martin Flörchinger als Heinrich Pfeiffer, Wolfgang Kaehler als Markus Stübner, Heinz Giese als Hans Buss, Albert Garbe als Bauer Barthel und Maly Delschaft als Frau Barthel unter der Regie von Martin Hellberg als Hommage an einen Nationalhelden, dessen Position bis heute umstritten ist. Thuringia 1525. The south of Germany is experiencing one of the few major popular movements in German history: the Peasants' War. This opulent historical film portrays the fate of pastor Thomas Müntzer (Wolfgang Stumpf), who becomes the leader of the uprising and the Reformation in Germany. He courageously stood up for Martin Luther's teachings, but while the latter turned away from the masses, Müntzer became their most active advocate. But even he can't avert the fateful defeat...
