Die Raumschiffe 'Argos' und 'Galliot' befinden sich auf Erkundsflug im Weltall. In der Nähe des Planeten 'Aura' sieht sich die 'Argos' gezwungen, auf dem unwirtlichen Nebelplaneten notzulanden. Am Boden entdecken Captain Mark Markary (Barry Sullivan) und sein Team die Übereste der 'Galliot' und dessen vernichteter Besatzung. Die Astronauten müssen erkennen, dass sie auf 'Aura' nicht allein sind und von unsichtbaren Außerirdischen bedroht werden, die es auf ihre Körper abgesehen haben...
Horror-Altmeister Mario Bava inszenierte Mitte der 60er Jahre mit 'Planet der Vampire' (1965) seinen bemerkenswertesten Ausflug ins Reich des Science-Fiction-Fantasygenres. Das Licht-und Farbenspiel des ungeheuer dichten, hochatmosphärischen B-Thrillers mit Barry Sullivan als Captain Mark Markary, Evi Marandi als Tiona, Norma Bengell als Sanya und Ángel Aranda als Wess Wescant nimmt geschickt Szenerie und Spannung des späteren Sci-Fi-Welthits 'Alien' (1979) von Ridley Scott vorweg.

The spaceships 'Argos' and 'Galliot' are on a reconnaissance flight in space. In the vicinity of the planet 'Aura', the 'Argos' is forced to make an emergency landing on the inhospitable nebulous planet. On the ground, Captain Mark Markary (Barry Sullivan) and his team discover the remains of the 'Galliot' and its destroyed crew. The astronauts must realize that they are not alone on 'Aura' and are threatened by invisible aliens who are after their bodies...
In the mid-60s, horror veteran Mario Bava staged his most remarkable foray into the realm of the science fiction fantasy genre with 'Planet of the Vampires' (1965). The play of light and colour of the incredibly dense, highly atmospheric B-thriller with Barry Sullivan as Captain Mark Markary, Evi Marandi as Tiona, Norma Bengell as Sanya and Ángel Aranda as Wess Wescant cleverly anticipates the scenery and tension of the later sci-fi world hit 'Alien' (1979) by Ridley Scott.
