Tirol, Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts. Die Findelkinder Martin und Georg werden von Mönchen erzogen und sind unzertrennlich, bis der Erzbischof den kleinen Georg unter seine Fittiche nimmt. Georg (Peter McDonald) wird Prior des Klosters, indem er als Kind gelebt hat, Martin (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) wird - wie alle anderen Findlinge - Söldner. Bei einem Fronturlaub trifft Martin nicht nur den Freund seiner Kindertage wieder, sondern auch die Liebe seines Lebens, die Henkerstochter Anna (Anastasia Griffith). Durch die Heirat mit der Tochter des Henkers wird Martin nicht nur zum gesellschaftlichen Außenseiter, er muss auch dessen blutiges Handwerk ausüben. Die Freundschaft der beiden Männer wird auf die Probe gestellt, als sich Prior Georg gezwungen sieht, die Autorität der Kirche gegen Andersdenkende durchzusetzen. Der Erzbischof verlangt von ihm jegliche Reform mit grausamer Repression zu unterdrücken - die Inquisition hält Einzug. Dabei soll Martin als Henker die Kirche in ihrem Machtanspruch unterstützen. Doch Martin lässt sich nicht instrumentalisieren. Als Folge findet er sich mit seiner Familie schon bald selbst vor dem Inquisitionstribunal und die Freundschaft der beiden wandelt sich in Hass.

Tyrol, beginning of the 16th century. The foundlings Martin and Georg are raised by monks and are inseparable until the archbishop takes little George under his wing. Georg (Peter McDonald) becomes the prior of the monastery where he lived as a child, Martin (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) becomes a mercenary - like all the other foundlings. During a holiday from the front, Martin not only meets the friend of his childhood days again, but also the love of his life, the executioner's daughter Anna (Anastasia Griffith). By marrying the executioner's daughter, Martin not only becomes a social outsider, he also has to practice his bloody craft. The friendship of the two men is put to the test when Prior George is forced to assert the authority of the church against dissenters. The archbishop demands that he suppress any reform with cruel repression - the Inquisition arrives. As an executioner, Martin is supposed to support the church in its claim to power. But Martin does not allow himself to be instrumentalized. As a result, he and his family soon find themselves before the Inquisition tribunal and the friendship between the two turns into hatred.
