Um sein neuestes Buch fertigzustellen, hat sich der Pulitzer-Preis-gekrönte Schriftsteller Michael (Liam Neeson) in einer Suite eines Pariser Hotels eingenistet. Nach der kürzlichen Trennung von seiner Frau Elaine (Kim Basinger) hat er nun eine leidenschaftliche Affäre mit Anna (Olivia Wilde), einer ambitionierten Jungjournalistin, die selbst auch Romane schreiben und veröffentlichen möchte. Zur gleichen Zeit hält sich der zwielichtige amerikanische Geschäftsmann Scott (Adrien Brody) in Italien auf, mit der Absicht, die Designs einiger Modehäuser zu stehlen. Weil Scott italienisches Essen hasst, begibt er sich auf der Suche nach kulinarisch Vertrautem in das 'Café Americano' und trifft dort auf Monika (Moran Atias), eine wunderschöne Roma, welche sich auf ein baldiges Wiedersehen mit ihrer kleinen Tochter freut. Als ihr das Geld gestohlen wird, das sie gespart hatte, um den Entführer ihrer Tochter zu bezahlen, sieht Scott sich veranlasst, Monika zu helfen. Gemeinsam machen sie sich auf in eine gefährliche Stadt im Süden Italiens - und langsam beginnt Scott zu ahnen, dass er zum Opfer einer ausgeklügelten Betrügerei geworden sein könnte. Zwischen der ehemaligen Soap-Darstellerin Julia (Mila Kunis) und ihrem Ex-Ehemann Rick (James Franco), einem New Yorker Künstler, tobt unterdessen ein Sorgerechtsstreit um ihren sechsjährigen Sohn. Völlig auf sich allein gestellt und die enormen Prozesskosten im Nacken, bleibt Julia nichts anderes übrig, als eine Anstellung als Dienstmädchen in genau jenem Luxushotel anzunehmen, das sie zuvor oft und gern als Gast betreten hatte. Dank ihrer Anwältin Theresa (Maria Bello) bietet sich Julia noch eine letzte Chance, das Gericht von ihrem Standpunkt zu überzeugen und ihr geliebtes Kind zurückzugewinnen. Ricks aktuelle Freundin Sam (Loan Chabanol) verfolgt den Streit derweil als mitfühlende Beobachterin...
'Third Person - Dritte Person' erzählt drei Geschichten voll Liebe, Leidenschaft, Vertrauen und Verrat in einer feindrähtigen Storyline, welche etliche Anklänge an Paul Haggis' Oscar-prämierten früheren Film 'L.A. Crash' (2005) enthält. Die Geschichten spielen in New York, Paris und Rom und drehen sich um drei Paare, die scheinbar keine Verbindung zueinander haben, jedoch starke Gemeinsamkeiten teilen: Liebespaare und entfremdete Ehefrauen, verlorene und wiedergefundene Kinder. Drehbuchautor und Regisseur Paul Haggis bringt es wie folgt auf den Punkt: "In jeder Beziehung gibt es immer eine dritte Person, vielleicht nicht aus romantischer Sicht, möglicherweise nicht einmal bewusst, aber doch ist sie in gewisser Art präsent". In seinem Innersten ist 'Dritte Person' weit mehr als eine Ansammlung von Liebesgeschichten - der Film ist ein Mysterium, ein Puzzle, in dem die Wahrheit sich immer nur für kurze Momente zeigt und dessen Hinweise lediglich im Augenwinkel erhascht werden können. To finish his latest book, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Michael (Liam Neeson) has taken up residence in a suite of a Paris hotel. After the recent separation from his wife Elaine (Kim Basinger), he now has a passionate affair with Anna (Olivia Wilde), an ambitious young journalist who also wants to write and publish novels herself. At the same time, shady American businessman Scott (Adrien Brody) is in Italy with the intention of stealing the designs of some fashion houses. Because Scott hates Italian food, he goes to the 'Café Americano' in search of culinary familiarity and meets Monika (Moran Atias), a beautiful Roma, who is looking forward to seeing her little daughter again soon. When the money she saved to pay for her daughter's kidnapper is stolen, Scott feels compelled to help Monika. Together they set off for a dangerous city in the south of Italy - and slowly Scott begins to suspect that he may have become the victim of a sophisticated scam. Meanwhile, a custody battle is raging between former soap actress Julia (Mila Kunis) and her ex-husband Rick (James Franco), a New York artist, over their six-year-old son. Completely on her own and with the enormous legal costs breathing down her neck, Julia has no choice but to accept a job as a maid in the very luxury hotel that she had previously entered often and gladly as a guest. 'Third Person' tells three stories full of love, passion, trust and betrayal in a fine-stranded storyline that contains several echoes of Paul Haggis' Oscar-winning earlier film 'L.A. Crash' (2005). The stories are set in New York, Paris and Rome and revolve around three couples who seem to have no connection to each other, but share strong similarities: lovers and estranged wives, lost and found children. Screenwriter and director Paul Haggis sums it up as follows: "In every relationship there is always a third person, perhaps not from a romantic point of view, perhaps not even consciously, but nevertheless present in a certain way". At its core, 'Third Person' is much more than a collection of love stories - the film is a mystery, a puzzle in which the truth only reveals itself for brief moments and whose clues can only be caught in the corner of the eye. And in the end, nothing is really as it seems. Paul Haggis is responsible for the script and direction of 'Third Person'.
