Im Jahr 1821 wagt sich der junge und hoffnungsvolle Dichter Lucien Chardon (Benjamin Voisin) aus der ländlichen Provinz in die große Stadt Paris. Er ist fest entschlossen, einen berühmten Roman zu schreiben und setzt dabei auf die Unterstützung seiner adligen Mäzenin Louise de Bargeton (Cécile de France). Doch alles kommt anders als erhofft und er ist bald auf sich allein gestellt. Durch Zufall erhält er als Autor eine Anstellung bei einer Pariser Zeitung und schnell steigt der sensible Idealist in der Pariser Gesellschaft auf. Durch seine sprachlich raffinierten Zeitungsartikel gewinnt er große Reputation in Welt der Literatur, der wichtige Verleger Dauriat (Gérard Depardieu) will sogar seinen Roman herausbringen. Doch Lucien überreizt die Gunst der Stunde und bald lernt er die wahren Mechanismen der Macht kennen: Profit, Neid und falsche Wahrheiten. Lucien durchläuft eine bittere Schule des Lebens, denn er erkennt, dass in Paris alles und jeder käuflich ist, solange man weiß, welche Stricke man im Hintergrund ziehen muss. In 1821, the young and hopeful poet Lucien Chardon (Benjamin Voisin) ventures from the rural provinces to the big city of Paris. He is determined to write a famous novel and relies on the support of his noble patron Louise de Bargeton (Cécile de France). But everything turns out differently than hoped and he is soon on his own. By chance, he gets a job as an author at a Parisian newspaper and the sensitive idealist quickly rises through the ranks of Parisian society. Through his linguistically sophisticated newspaper articles, he gains a great reputation in the world of literature, the important publisher Dauriat (Gérard Depardieu) even wants to publish his novel. But Lucien overrides the opportunity and soon learns the true mechanisms of power: profit, envy and false truths. Lucien goes through a bitter school of life, because he realizes that everything and everyone can be bought in Paris, as long as you know what strings you have to pull in the background. Can Lucien stay true to his dreams or will the city of love devour him?
