Als sie vom Tod ihrer Mutter Lorraine erfährt, kehrt Purslane Hominy Will (Scarlett Johansson) nach langer Zeit zurück in ihre Heimatstadt 'New Orleans'. Doch ihre Heimkehr verläuft für die 17-Jährige ganz anders als erwartet. Erst verpasst sie das Begräbnis um einen Tag. Dann stellt sie fest, dass sich der Familiensitz, ein einfaches Holzhaus am Stadtrand, in eine heruntergekommene Bruchbude verwandelt hat. Und zu allem Überfluss muss sie sich auch noch mit zwei fremden Männern arrangieren, die sich im Haus eingenistet haben: mit dem in die Jahre gekommenen Ex-Literaturprofessor Bobby Long (John Travolta) und seinem Schützling Lawson Pines (Gabriel Macht). Pursys Mutter hat den Dreien das Haus zu gleichen Teilen vermacht, und so entsteht eine unfreiwillige Wohngemeinschaft. Pursy bringt das Domizil nach und nach auf Vordermann - und ist ziemlich genervt von den beiden Männern, die sich als Bohemiens gebärden und behaupten, sie arbeiteten an einem Buch über Bobbys Leben, tatsächlich aber einen feucht-fröhlichen Müßiggang kultivieren. Doch ganz allmählich bildet sich eine eigenwillige Freundschaft zwischen der aufgeweckten Pursy und ihren Mitbewohnern. Und je besser sie sich mit Bobby und Lawson versteht, desto näher kommt sie den bitter-süßen Geheimnissen, die ihre alte Heimat für sie birgt...
Basierend auf dem Roman 'Off Magazine Street' von Ronald Everett Capps erzählt die Newcomerin Shainee Gabel in 'Lovesong für Bobby Long' (2004) eine ganz eigenartige, einzigartige Familiengeschichte. Offen und spielerisch führt uns der Film zunächst auf ein Terrain, das sich das Kino bisher kaum je erschlossen hat: die Peripherie von 'New Orleans' mit ihrer satten, dampfenden Schwüle. Eine gewisse Trägheit, eine entspannte Aura legt sich hier über alles, und diesem Rhythmus passt sich Gabels Inszenierung stilsicher an. Mit Sinn fürs Detail und Gespür für stille, unspektakuläre Alltagsmomente beschreibt sie das Leben rund um den charismatischen Bobby Long. Es ist eine Welt voller Geschichten und Lieder, voller Abenteuer und Affären, aber geprägt auch von leiser Melancholie und einsamer Verzweiflung. Die große Kunst von 'Lovesong für Bobby Long' besteht darin, diese Welt zunächst als sanften Fluss der Ereignisse zu skizzieren, der sich kaum zu einer geradlinigen Geschichte zu fügen scheint, dann aber sukzessive ein weitverzweigtes Netz der Bezüge und Beziehungen, der Verhältnisse und Verstrickungen freilegt. Jeder hat hier, bewusst oder unbewusst, sein Geheimnis - und einen finalen Paukenschlag hält der Film obendrein auch noch parat.

When she learns of the death of her mother Lorraine, Purslane hominy Will (Scarlett Johansson) returns to her hometown 'New Orleans' after a long time. But her return home goes very differently than expected for the 17-year-old. First she misses the funeral by a day. Then she realizes that the family home, a simple wooden house on the outskirts of the city, has turned into a run-down shack. And to make matters worse, she also has to come to terms with two strange men who have taken up residence in the house: the aging ex-literature professor Bobby Long (John Travolta) and his protégé Lawson Pines (Gabriel Macht). Pursy's mother has bequeathed the house to the three of them in equal shares, and so an involuntary shared apartment is created. Pursy gradually whips the domicile into shape - and is quite annoyed by the two men, who pretend to be bohemians and claim that they are working on a book about Bobby's life, but are actually cultivating a boozy idleness. But very gradually, an idiosyncratic friendship develops between the bright Pursy and her roommates. And the better she gets along with Bobby and Lawson, the closer she gets to the bitter-sweet secrets that her old home holds for her...
Based on the novel 'Off Magazine Street' by Ronald Everett Capps, newcomer Shainee Gabel tells a very strange, unique family story in 'Lovesong for Bobby Long' (2004). Open and playful, the film first takes us to a terrain that cinema has hardly ever explored before: the periphery of 'New Orleans' with its rich, steamy sultriness. A certain inertia, a relaxed aura overlays everything here, and Gabel's production adapts to this rhythm with style. With a sense of detail and a feeling for quiet, unspectacular everyday moments, she describes life around the charismatic Bobby Long. It is a world full of stories and songs, full of adventures and affairs, but also characterized by quiet melancholy and lonely despair. The great art of 'Lovesong for Bobby Long' is to initially sketch this world as a gentle flow of events that hardly seems to fit into a straightforward story, but then successively exposes an extensive network of references and relationships that exposes relationships and entanglements. Everyone has their secret here, consciously or unconsciously - and the film also has a final bang in store.
