Bei der Ausrichtung eines Festes für den Sonnenkönig Ludwig XIV. steht der Ruf von François Vatel (Gérard Depardieu) als Meisterkoch auf dem Spiel. Unvorhergesehene Zwischenfälle und Hofintrigen bedrohen das Spektakel. Vollends kompliziert wird es, als sich ausgerechnet die Lieblingsmätresse des Königs (Julian Sands) Anne de Montausier (Uma Thurman) in Vatel verliebt und sein Schicksal beim Kartenspiel entschieden werden soll: Schloss 'Chantilly' im Morgengrauen. Dienerschaft, Sekretäre und Hausboten tümmeln sich hektisch auf den weiten Gängen, Zimmer werden verteilt, nach Rang, Eigenheiten und Sonderwünschen der zu erwartenden Gäste. Die Dienstmädchen bringen den Boden auf Hochglanz, und in den Küchen warten die Köche und Gehilfen auf die letzten Anweisungen Vatels. When organizing a party for the Sun King Louis XIV, François Vatel's (Gérard Depardieu) reputation as a master chef is at stake. Unforeseen incidents and court intrigues threaten the spectacle. Things get completely complicated when the king's favorite mistress (Julian Sands) Anne de Montausier (Uma Thurman) falls in love with Vatel and his fate is to be decided in a game of cards: Castle 'Chantilly' at dawn. Servants, secretaries and housekeepers bustle frantically in the wide corridors, rooms are distributed according to rank, peculiarities and special requests of the expected guests.
