Eigentlich sind die beiden ein richtig tolles Team: die alleinerziehende Mutter Anne (Demi Moore) und ihre 16-jährige Tochter Lola (Miley Cyrus), die von ihren Freunden nur 'LOL' genannt wird. Dass das in der Facebook-Generation ihrer Tochter für 'Laughing Out Loud' ('Ich lach mich tot') steht, weiß Anne nicht - und auch sonst hat sie wenig Ahnung, was eigentlich in ihrer Tochter so vorgeht. Denn die ist gerade dabei, sich in ihren besten Freund, Kyle (Douglas Booth) zu verlieben. Da Lola von ihm glaubt, dass er schon erste sexuelle Erfahrungen gemacht hat, will sie sich keine Blöße geben und gibt vor, keine Jungfrau mehr zu sein. Das ist aber gar nicht so leicht und weil sie sich so sehr in Kyle verliebt hat, dass es 'wehtut', will sie es nun auch endlich wissen und zur Frau werden. All das und noch viel mehr - nämlich auch den ersten Drogenkonsum - vertraut Lola ihrem Tagebuch an und als ihre Mutter das entdeckt, fällt diese aus allen Wolken. Anne begreift schlagartig, dass ihre Tochter nicht mehr der niedliche, unschuldige Teenager ist, für den sie sie gehalten hat. Und weil sie in ihrem eigenen Gefühlschaos steckt, nachdem sie immer noch mit ihrem frisch geschiedenen Mann schläft, aber ihr Herz zusehends von dem sympathischen Polizisten James (Jay Hernandez) erobert wird, überfordert sie der Pubertätsstress mit Lola ziemlich. Und Lola selbst kann jetzt nur noch an eines denken: die anstehende Klassenfahrt nach Paris, auf der nicht nur die Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt auf der Tagesordnung stehen sollen...
'LOL - Laughing Out Loud' ist eine ebenso temporeich wie einfühlsam inszenierte Coming-of-Age-Komödie. Die Hauptrollen spielen zwei angesagte weibliche Hollywood-Stars: Demi Moore ('Ghost - Nachricht von Sam', 'Eine Frage der Ehre') brilliert als fürsorgende Mutter, deren eigenes Liebesleben kaum ereignisärmer ist als das ihrer Tochter. Miley Cyrus ('Hannah Montana') gelingt der Imagewandel von einer Teenie-Ikone zur mutigen Charakterdarstellerin. In weiteren Rollen sind die Jungstars Ashley Greene ('Twilight'), Douglas Booth ('Worried About the Boy'), Adam Sevani ('Step Up 3D'), George Finn ('How I Met Your Mother'), Ashley Hinshaw ('Fringe'), Lina Esco ('Kings Highway') und Tanz Watson zu sehen. Thomas Jane ('Hung'), Jay Hernández ('Takers'), Marlo Thomas ('That Girl'), Austin Nichols ('Glory Road'), Gina Gershon ('P.S. I Love You'), Fisher Stevens ('Awake') und Nora Dunn ('Pineapple Express') runden das Ensemble ab. 'LOL - Laughing Out Loud' ist ein Film von Regisseurin Lisa Azuelos, die zusammen mit Kamir Aïnouz auch das Drehbuch schrieb.

Actually, the two are a really great team: single mother Anne (Demi Moore) and her 16-year-old daughter Lola (Miley Cyrus), who is only called 'LOL' by her friends. Anne doesn't know that in her daughter's Facebook generation this stands for 'Laughing Out Loud' - and she has little idea what is actually going on in her daughter's mind. Because she is about to fall in love with her best friend, Kyle (Douglas Booth). Since Lola believes that he has already had his first sexual experiences, she does not want to expose herself and pretends that she is no longer a virgin. But that's not so easy and because she has fallen in love with Kyle so much that it 'hurts', she finally wants to know and become a woman. Lola entrusts all this and much more - namely also the first drug use - to her diary and when her mother discovers this, she is flabbergasted. Anne suddenly realizes that her daughter is no longer the cute, innocent teenager she thought she was. And because she is in her own emotional chaos after she still sleeps with her newly divorced husband, but her heart is visibly conquered by the sympathetic policeman James (Jay Hernandez), the puberty stress with Lola overwhelms her quite a bit. And Lola herself can now only think about one thing: the upcoming class trip to Paris, on which not only the sights of the city are to be on the agenda...
'LOL - Laughing Out Loud' is a coming-of-age comedy that is as fast-paced as it is sensitively directed. The leading roles are played by two hip female Hollywood stars: Demi Moore ('Ghost', 'A Question of Honor') shines as a caring mother whose own love life is hardly less eventful than that of her daughter. Miley Cyrus ('Hannah Montana') succeeds in changing her image from a teen icon to a courageous character actress.
