Der junge Jimmy Doyle (Robert De Niro) lernt im August 1945 in New York auf einer rauschenden Siegesfeier zum Ende des 2. Weltkriegs die Sängerin Francine Evans (Liza Minnelli) kennen. Die beiden werden privat wie künstlerisch ein Paar und schließen sich der Jazzband von Frankie Harte (Georgie Auld) an. Doch mit der Zeit zeigt sich, dass sie völlig verschiedene Auffassungen davon haben, was die Musik ihnen bedeutet.
