Der vierfache Oscar-Preisträger Sir Laurence Olivier agierte in der hochkarätigen Adaption 'Richard III.' (1955) des berühmten Shakespeare-Königsdramas als Hauptdarsteller, Regisseur, Produzent und Drehbuchautor in Personalunion. Das Lexikon des Internationalen Films urteilte: "Unterstützt von der souveränen Kamera und einem Ensemble kompetenter Shakespeare-Darsteller (allen voran der Regisseur), transponierte Olivier die dramatische Chronik klug, opulent und werkgetreu auf die Leinwand. Eine der wenigen gelungenen Dramenverfilmungen." Das große Personenlexikon des Films sprach von einer "meisterlichen Shakespeare-Adaption". Das 'British Film Institute' schrieb, dass Oliviers 'Richard III.' mehr zur Verbreitung von Shakespeare beigetragen habe, als jedes andere Werk.

Four-time Oscar winner Sir Laurence Olivier acted in the top-class adaptation 'Richard III' (1955) of the famous Shakespeare royal drama as the main actor, director, producer and screenwriter in personal union. The Encyclopaedia of International Film judged: "Supported by the sovereign camera and an ensemble of competent Shakespeare actors (above all the director), Olivier transposed the dramatic chronicle to the screen intelligently, opulently and true to the work. One of the few successful drama adaptations." The film's large encyclopaedia of characters spoke of a "masterful Shakespeare adaptation". The British Film Institute wrote that Olivier's Richard III contributed more to the spread of Shakespeare than any other work.
