Nach einem heftigen Streit mit ihrem langjährigen Geliebten Dr. Peters ändert sich das sichere Leben von Miriam Polischka und ihrem 15-jährigen Sohn Michael, kurz Polischka genannt, grundlegend. Die beiden müssen Peters Villa im reichen Zehlendorf verlassen und sich im chaotischen Berlin-Neukölln einquartieren. Vollauf beschäftigt mit der Suche nach einer neuen guten Partie entgehen Miriam (Jenny Elvers) die Probleme ihres Sohnes in der neuen Umgebung. Polischka (David Kross) wird von einer Gang brutal zur Zahlung von Schutzgeld gezwungen. Er bricht mit seinen neuen Schulfreunden Crille und Matze in die vertraute Zehlendorfer Villa ein, um aus dem Erlös der Beute die Gang bezahlen zu können. Erol (Oktay Özdemir), dem Anführer der Gang reicht das nicht. Polischka wehrt sich, aber bevor der Streit eskalieren kann, rettet ihn Hamal (Erhan Emre), ein italienischer Hehler, der eigentlich Afghane ist, aus dieser ausweglosen Situation. Da im Neuköllner Kiez aber nichts umsonst ist, muss Polischka für ihn und Barut (Kida Khodr Ramadan) als Drogenkurier arbeiten. Als er an einem Tag eine heißere Lieferung als üblich übernimmt, wird er von Erol überrascht. Um ihn zu provozieren wirft dieser Polischkas Rucksack mit samt dem Drogengeld von einer S-Bahn Brücke. Der Rucksack landet auf einem gerade vorbeifahrenden Zug. Damit wird Polischka auch für Hamal zu einem Problem, denn die Schulsachen in Verbindung mit dem Geld werden die Polizei auf den Plan rufen. Hamal muss reagieren und auf einer Lichtung außerhalb der Stadt kommt es zum Show-down...
Detlev Buck mal anders, knallhart und schonungslos: Mit 'Knallhart' (2006) präsentiert er einen Großstadtfilm nach der Buchvorlage von Gregor Tressnow über authentische, alltägliche Gewalt und Gegengewalt in Deutschland. Die Krawalle der Pariser Banlieue lassen grüßen. Eine überzeugende Geschichte vom Ende einer Kindheit, vom Ende der Unschuld.

After a fierce argument with her long-time lover Dr. Peters, the safe life of Miriam Polischka and her 15-year-old son Michael, known as Polischka for short, changes fundamentally. The two have to leave Peter's villa in wealthy Zehlendorf and settle in chaotic Berlin-Neukölln. Fully occupied with the search for a new good match, Miriam (Jenny Elvers) escapes her son's problems in the new environment. Polischka (David Kross) is brutally forced by a gang to pay protection money. He breaks into the familiar Zehlendorf villa with his new school friends Crille and Matze in order to be able to pay for the gang from the proceeds of the loot. That's not enough for Erol (Oktay Özdemir), the leader of the gang. Polischka defends himself, but before the dispute can escalate, Hamal (Erhan Emre), an Italian fence who is actually Afghan, rescues him from this hopeless situation. But since nothing is free in the Neukölln neighborhood, Polischka has to work as a drug courier for him and Barut (Kida Khodr Ramadan). When he takes over a hotter than usual delivery one day, he is surprised by Erol. To provoke him, he throws Polischka's backpack with the drug money off an S-Bahn bridge. The backpack lands on a passing train. This also makes Polischka a problem for Hamal, because the school supplies in connection with the money will call the police to the scene. Hamal has to react and in a clearing outside the city there is a showdown...
