'Fräulein Kitty', 'Dreißig Sekunden über Tokio' und 'Frühling des Lebens' sind nur ein paar seiner Drehbücher, die in den Händen der Hollywood-Studios zu großen Blockbustern werden. Es ist keine Frage, dass er einen 'Oscar' bekommen wird, die Frage ist nur: wann? Doch mit dem Kalten Krieg und dem Aufstieg des Kommunistenhassers Senator McCarthy endet Trumbos Aufstieg. Die Kolumnistin Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) macht Stimmung gegen die 'hoch bezahlten Verräter' Hollywoods, und die Filmstars John Wayne und Ronald Reagan helfen bei der Hexenjagd. Als sich Trumbo weigert, vor dem berüchtigten Komitee für unamerikanische Umtriebe auszusagen, landet er auf der 'Schwarzen Liste' und verliert seinen Studiovertrag mit 'MGM'. Doch Trumbo wäre nicht Trumbo, würde er sich unterkriegen lassen. Unter einem Pseudonym schreibt er weiter - und dabei entstehen seine besten Bücher. Als 1953 sein Alibi-Autor für 'Ein Herz und eine Krone' mit dem 'Oscar' ausgezeichnet wird, schöpft Trumbo neue Hoffnung und kämpft unablässig um seine Rehabilitation. Dann präsentiert ihm Kirk Douglas seine Idee zu 'Spartacus' und die Zeit scheint reif für den Gegenangriff...
Vor dem Hintergrund der McCarthy-Zeit ab 1945 erzählt Regisseur Jay Roach ('Meine Braut, ihr Vater und ich') die fast vergessene Geschichte eines der erfolgreichsten und bestbezahlten Drehbuchautoren der goldenen Hollywood-Zeit. In der Titelrolle als Dalton Trumbo brilliert Bryan Cranston, der zuletzt mit seinen Auftritten in der Serie 'Breaking Bad' und im Blockbuster-Remake von 'Godzilla' das Publikum begeisterte. Als seine Ehefrau glänzt Diane Lane ('Untreu') an seiner Seite, als seine Tochter ist Elle Fanning ('Maleficent - Die dunkle Fee') zu sehen. In the 40s, things are going terrific for Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston). He is one of the highest-paid screenwriters in Hollywood. 'Miss Kitty', 'Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo' and 'Spring of Life' are just a few of his scripts that become big blockbusters in the hands of Hollywood studios. There is no question that he will get an 'Oscar', the only question is: when? But with the Cold War and the rise of the communist-hater Senator McCarthy, Trumbo's rise came to an end. Columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) stirs up sentiment against Hollywood's 'highly-paid traitors', and movie stars John Wayne and Ronald Reagan help in the witch hunt. When Trumbo refuses to testify before the notorious Committee on Un-American Activities, he ends up on the 'blacklist' and loses his studio contract with 'MGM'. But Trumbo wouldn't be Trumbo if he let it get him down. He continues to write under a pseudonym - and in the process his best books are created. When his alibi author for 'A Heart and a Crown' was awarded the 'Oscar' in 1953, Trumbo drew new hope and fought relentlessly for his rehabilitation. Then Kirk Douglas presents him with his idea for 'Spartacus' and the time seems ripe for the counterattack...
Set against the backdrop of the McCarthy era from 1945 onwards, director Jay Roach ('My Bride, Her Father and I') tells the almost forgotten story of one of the most successful and highest-paid screenwriters of the golden age of Hollywood. In the title role as Dalton Trumbo, Bryan Cranston, who recently thrilled audiences with his appearances in the series 'Breaking Bad' and in the blockbuster remake of 'Godzilla', shines. Diane Lane ('Unfaithful') shines as his wife at his side, and Elle Fanning ('Maleficent') can be seen as his daughter.
