In den Wagen eines Wanderzirkus kreischen hysterisch die Affen in ihren Käfigen. Um sie herum sterben Menschen oder schlachten sich gegenseitig ab, in einer Hysterie viel schlimmerer Art: Es herrschen die Wirren des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs (1936-1939), der zwischen der demokratisch gewählten Regierung und den Putschisten unter General Francisco Franco ausgetragen wird. 1937 wird einer der Artisten des Wanderzirkus, der 'Dumme Clown' (Santiago Segura), mitten aus einer Vorstellung gerissen und von den Regierungssoldaten zwangsrekrutiert. Noch im Clownskostüm richtet er mit seiner Machete ein Blutbad in den Reihen der Franquistas an. Viele Jahre später, 1973, in der Endphase des Francoregimes, versucht sich der Sohn dieses Clowns, Javier (Carlos Areces), im gleichen Metier wie sein Vater und heuert bei einem Zirkus an. Javier verkörpert die Figur des 'Traurigen Clowns' und trifft auf eine Truppe exaltierter Artisten, darunter die menschliche Kanonenkugel, ein Elefantendompteur oder ein streitbares Paar von Hundetrainern. Außerdem gibt es bei diesem Zirkus noch einen anderen Clown: Sergio (Antonio De La Torre), Star der Manege, ein hochtalentierter 'Lustiger Clown', den alle Kinder lieben. Javier erkennt bald, dass Sergio neben seiner Clownskunst eine furchtbare sadistische Ader hat. Sergios schöne Freundin, die Zirkusartistin Natalia (Carolina Bang), hat unter seiner krankhaften Brutalität am meisten zu leiden. Andererseits scheint sie jedoch die Bestialität des Clowns Sergio sexuell anziehend zu finden. Als sich Javier auf den ersten Blick hoffnungslos in Natalia verliebt, ist klar, dass alle drei Figuren ins Verderben steuern. Denn natürlich gefällt es Sergio gar nicht, dass sein Gegenpart - der dicke, traurige Clown - für die schöne Natalia Gefühle hegt. Dies ist der Anfang der Geschichte über die zwei fürchterlich entstellten Clowns Javier und Sergio. Angetrieben von Wut, Verzweiflung und Begierde bekämpfen sie einander bis zum Tod, in der Hoffnung, die Liebe der schönsten Frau im Wanderzirkus zu gewinnen...
Der baskische Regisseur Álex de la Iglesia lässt in seiner furiosen Groteske diese Zirkustruppe als Sinnbild einer spanischen Gesellschaft stehen, die sich in zunehmendem Irrsinn buchstäblich selbst zerfleischt. Die grelle Politsatire gewann in Venedig 2011 die Preise für die beste Regie und das beste Drehbuch. Jury-Präsident Quentin Tarantino war entzückt von der grellen Ästhetik des Films, und hinsichtlich seines kaltschnäuzigen Humors kann sich 'Mad Circus - Eine Ballade von Liebe und Tod' durchaus mit anderen bildgewaltigen Befreiungsorgien, etwa Tarantinos 'Inglourious Basterds' (2009), vergleichen lassen.

In the wagons of a traveling circus, the monkeys screech hysterically in their cages. Around them, people are dying or slaughtering each other, in a hysteria of a much worse kind: the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), which is being fought between the democratically elected government and the putschists under General Francisco Franco, prevails. In 1937, one of the artists of the traveling circus, the 'Stupid Clown' (Santiago Segura), is torn out of the middle of a performance and forcibly recruited by the government soldiers. Still in a clown costume, he causes a bloodbath in the ranks of the Franquistas with his machete. Many years later, in 1973, in the final phase of the Franco regime, the son of this clown, Javier (Carlos Areces), tries his hand at the same profession as his father and signs on with a circus. Javier embodies the figure of the 'Sad Clown' and meets a troupe of exalted artists, including the human cannonball, an elephant tamer or a quarrelsome pair of dog trainers. In addition, there is another clown in this circus: Sergio (Antonio De La Torre), star of the ring, a highly talented 'funny clown' who is loved by all children. Javier soon realizes that Sergio has a terrible sadistic streak in addition to his clown skills. Sergio's beautiful girlfriend, the circus artist Natalia (Carolina Bang), suffers the most from his pathological brutality. On the other hand, however, she seems to find the bestiality of the clown Sergio sexually attractive. When Javier falls hopelessly in love with Natalia at first sight, it is clear that all three characters are heading for their doom. Because, of course, Sergio doesn't like it at all that his counterpart - the fat, sad clown - has feelings for the beautiful Natalia. This is the beginning of the story about the two horribly disfigured clowns Javier and Sergio. Driven by anger, despair and desire, they fight each other to the death, hoping to win the love of the most beautiful woman in the traveling circus...
In his furious grotesque, the Basque director Álex de la Iglesia leaves this circus troupe standing as a symbol of a Spanish society that is literally tearing itself apart in increasing madness. The garish political satire won the prizes for best director and best screenplay in Venice in 2011. Jury president Quentin Tarantino was delighted by the garish aesthetics of the film, and in terms of its cold-blooded humor, 'Mad Circus - A Ballad of Love and Death' can certainly be compared to other visually stunning liberation, such as Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' (2009).
