Als Charles Hayward (Max Irons) nach Ende des Krieges endlich nach England zurückkehrt und offiziell um die Hand seiner Sophia de Haviland (Stefanie Martini) anhalten will, kommt den beiden eine Familientragödie dazwischen: Sophias Großvater Aristide wurde vergiftet. Die Newcomer Max Irons ('Seelen', 'Die Frau in Gold') und Stefanie Martini ('Emerald City', 'Doctor Thorne') ergänzen die hochkarätige Darstellerriege.
