Eigentlich arbeitet Vizepolizeidirektor Rocco Schiavone (Marco Giallini) in Rom. Doch da er bei seinen Ermittlungsmethoden zu häufig die Grenzen der Legalität ausgetestet hat, wurde er strafversetzt. Aus der Sicht eines Großstadtmenschen landete er ausgerechnet an den Grenzen der Zivilisation, im 'Aostatal', am Rande der Alpen in Italiens hohem Norden. Der mit allen Wassern gewaschene Hauptstadtbulle hat aber auch eine schwache Seite: Er kann den Tod seiner geliebten Frau Marina einfach nicht verwinden. Um auf andere Gedanken zu kommen, stürzt er sich gewohnt kompromisslos in die Arbeit. Zwar muss er zunächst einmal untertauchen, doch schon bald steckt er wieder Hals über Kopf in den Ermittlungen rund um einen ermordeten Croupier. Dabei interessiert sich auch die Journalistin Sandra Buccellato (Valeria Solarino) für den Fall und löchert Rocco mit zahllosen Fragen. Schließlich muss er wegen einer lebenswichtigen Operation ins Krankenhaus. Sich dort nach der OP einfach mal zu erholen, kommt für ihn allerdings nicht in Frage. Erst einmal muss er den plötzlichen Tod eines Mitpatienten aufklären, der während eines medizinischen Eingriffs ums Leben kam...

But because he tested the limits of legality too often in his investigative methods, he was transferred to a criminal position. From the point of view of a city dweller, he landed at the very edge of civilization, in the 'Aosta Valley', on the edge of the Alps in Italy's far north. But the capital's bull, who knows all the tricks of the trade, also has a weak side: he simply can't get over the death of his beloved wife Marina. In order to get his mind off things, he throws himself into his work as usual uncompromisingly.
