Wohin mit Oma? Marie (Annette Frier), die ewig besorgte, gestresste Tochter weiß es genau: Oma (Marianne Sägebrecht) kommt in das idyllisch gelegene Seniorenheim, nahe der Familie, wo sie neue Freunde in ihrem Alter finden kann. Aber Oma weiß es besser. Sie will nach Rom, zum Papst. Davon kann sie weder eine im Internet erstandene Urkunde mit dem päpstlichen Segen abbringen noch der Umstand, dass die Familie nicht mitreisen will. Denn Oma trägt schon viel zu lange eine Jugendsünde mit sich herum, die sie nun endlich beichten will. Und so macht sie sich kurzentschlossen alleine auf den Weg. In Rom angekommen steht sie bei ihrer Enkelin Martina (Miriam Stein) vor der Tür, von der die ganze Familie glaubt, dass sie als Au-pair in einer katholischen Familie arbeitet. In Wahrheit aber lebt sie in wilder Ehe mit einem Rockmusiker (Raz Degan). Was aber noch viel schlimmer ist: Eine Audienz beim Papst ist für Normalsterbliche unmöglich. Für Oma, der auch noch der schlitzohrige Lebemann Lorenzo (Giancarlo Giannini) in die Quere kommt, führen die Versuche, den päpstlichen Segen zu bekommen, fast in die Katastrophe. Martina und Marie, die Oma voller Sorge hinterher gereist ist, haben alle Mühe, mitzuhalten. Doch Oma gibt nicht auf. Ihr Weg in den Vatikan nimmt einige unerwartete Wendungen und führt sie zurück ins pralle Leben, das Oma längst vergessen hatte...
Regisseur Tomy Wigand ('Fußball ist unser Leben' 2000, 'Das fliegende Klassenzimmer' 2002, 'Polly Blue Eyes' 2005) inszeniert mit 'Omamamia - Oma in Roma' eine temporeiche, unbeschwerte Generationen-Komödie; ein Film über Familie, Frauen und ihre Männer: jede von ihnen glaubt zu wissen, wie 'Leben' geht, doch das läuft immer anders und vor allem als man denkt. Dabei ist die Rolle einer Frau, deren Tatendrang und beherzter Mut sich auch durch ihr Alter nicht beirren lässt, maßgeschneidert für die bayerische Schauspielerin und Kabarettistin Marianne Sägebrecht ('Out of Rosenheim' 1987), die mit 'Omamamia' ihr höchst unterhaltsames Leinwand-Comeback feiert. Gemeinsam mit Erfolgskomödiantin Annette Frier ('Danni Lowinski') als Tochter mit Kontrollzwang und Shooting-Star Miriam Stein ('Goethe!') als abenteuerhungrige Enkelin mischt Marianne Sägebrecht Rom und die Männerwelt auf, bis hin zum Papst. Die italienischen Stars Giancarlo Giannini ('James Bond 007 - Casino Royale') und Raz Degan ('Alexander') komplettieren die Besetzung.

Where to go with grandma? Marie (Annette Frier), the eternally worried, stressed daughter knows it exactly: Grandma (Marianne Sägebrecht) comes to the idyllically located retirement home, close to the family, where she can make new friends her age. But Grandma knows better. She wants to go to Rome, to the Pope. Neither a certificate with the papal blessing purchased on the Internet nor the fact that the family does not want to travel with them can dissuade them from doing so. Because grandma has been carrying around a youthful sin for far too long, which she now finally wants to confess. And so she spontaneously sets off on her own. When she arrives in Rome, she stands at the door of her granddaughter Martina (Miriam Stein), who the whole family believes is working as an au pair in a Catholic family. In truth, however, she lives in a wild marriage with a rock musician (Raz Degan). But what is even worse: An audience with the Pope is impossible for ordinary mortals. For Grandma, who also gets in the way of the sly bon vivant Lorenzo (Giancarlo Giannini), the attempts to get the papal blessing almost lead to disaster. Martina and Marie, who has followed grandma full of concern, have every effort to keep up. But grandma doesn't give up. Her way to the Vatican takes some unexpected turns and leads her back to the full life that grandma had long forgotten...
