Grégoire Canvel (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) führt ein scheinbar vollkommenes Leben. Er hat eine Ehefrau, die ihn liebt, drei entzückende Kinder und einen erfüllenden Job. Doch was keiner sieht: Er geht zu viele geschäftliche Risiken ein, macht immer mehr Schulden und hat keine Kraft sich dagegen aufzubäumen. Dafür nimmt eine lähmende Müdigkeit, eine wachsende Verzweiflung von ihm Besitz und es scheint für ihn nur einen finalen Ausweg zu geben. Mit einem Schlag ändert sich für die Familie alles: Konfrontiert mit Trauer, Verzweiflung, Wut und Machtlosigkeit, nimmt seine Frau Sylvia (Chiara Caselli), nach dem ersten ungläubigen Innehalten, den Kampf auf. Sie muss die marode Firma retten, kämpft sich durch das Chaos im Büro und führt die noch laufenden Projekte zu Ende. Gleichzeitig möchte sie, dass sich ihre Töchter der Realität stellen und erwachsen werden. Zum ersten Mal in ihrem Leben beginnt Sylvia hinter die Fassade ihres gemeinsamen Lebens zu blicken...
'Der Vater meiner Kinder' (2009) ist der zweite Langfilm von Regisseurin Mia Hansen-Løve, die damit dem französischen Filmproduzenten, ihrem Mentor Humbert Balsan, ein Denkmal setzt. 2009 gewann die französisch-deutsche Produktion den Spezialpreis der Jury in der Festivalreihe 'Un Certain Regard' in Cannes. 'Le père de mes enfants, so der französische Originaltitel, ist eine Produktion der 'Les Films Pelleas' in Koproduktion mit der Berliner '27 Films Production' in Zusammenarbeit mit 'ARTE France Cinéma', gefördert von 'Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication', 'Centre National de la Cinématographie', 'Canal+', 'Cinécinéma' und der 'FFA' Filmförderungsanstalt.

But what no one sees is that he is taking too many business risks, incurring more and more debt and has no strength to rebel against it. Instead, a paralyzing tiredness, a growing despair takes possession of him and there seems to be only one final way out for him. In one fell swoop, everything changes for the family: Confronted with grief, despair, anger and powerlessness, his wife Sylvia (Chiara Caselli) takes up the fight after the first incredulous pause. She has to save the ailing company, fights her way through the chaos in the office and completes the projects that are still running. At the same time, she wants her daughters to face reality and grow up. For the first time in her life, Sylvia begins to look behind the façade of their life together...
'The Father of My Children' (2009) is the second feature film by director Mia Hansen-Løve, who thus erects a monument to the French film producer, her mentor Humbert Balsan.
