Acapulco, Mexiko. In einem Luxushotel am Strand verbringt Neil Bennett (Tim Roth) mit seiner Frau Alice (Charlotte Gainsbourg) und den Kindern entspannte Urlaubstage. Doch das Idyll hat ein Ende, als Alice ein Anruf aus London erreicht: Ihre Mutter ist gestorben. Während sie umgehend zurück nach London reist, um sich um die Hinterlassenschaften zu kümmern, kehrt Neil vom Flughafen an den Strand zurück - angeblich hat er seinen Pass im Hotel liegen lassen. Um einer Rückkehr in sein Leben zu umgehen, lügt er Alice fortan weiter an. Bis sie eines Tages wieder am Strand steht und ihn konfrontiert, mit seinen Lügen und seiner fehlenden familiären Verantwortung. Die schwelenden Konflikte brechen offen zutage, doch Neil zieht sich nur umso weiter zurück und bleibt nach einem weiteren Schicksalsschlag am Ende wieder allein am Strand zurück, während die Sonne immer wieder aufs Neue untergeht, am Strand von Acapulco...
Mit 'Sundown - Geheimnisse in Acapulco' (2021) setzt Autor und Regisseur Michel Franco nach 'New Order - Die neue Weltordnung' (2020) seine filmische Suche nach Reaktionen von Individuen und Gesellschaften in Ausnahmesituationen fort, taucht in einem ruhigen Erzählstil, der einer Momentaufnahme gleicht, ein in die Sonnen- wie Schattenseiten von Acapulco und legt dabei oftmals wortlos das Seelenleben seiner Protagonisten offen. Ein flirrendes, leises, bildstarkes Drama, das vor der kontrastreichen Kulisse Acapulcos die Diskrepanzen aufzeigt, die in jeder noch so untrennbar scheinenden Beziehung stecken und die umso schonungsloser zutage treten, wenn das Gleichgewicht eines bestehenden Systems durch unvorhergesehene Ereignisse ins Wanken gerät. 'Sundown' feierte seine Premiere im Wettbewerb der 78. Internationale Filmfestspiele von Venedig und startet am 9. Juni 2022 im Verleih von '24 Bilder' und 'Ascot Elite Entertainment' bundesweit in den Kinos.

In order to avoid a return to his life, he continues to lie to Alice from then on. Until one day she stands on the beach again and confronts him, with his lies and his lack of family responsibility. The smoldering conflicts break out openly, but Neil only withdraws all the further and, after another stroke of fate, is left alone on the beach in the end, while the sun sets again and again, on the beach of Acapulco...

'Sundown' celebrated its premiere in the competition of the 78.
