Doch einzig die Erdbebenexpertin Dr. Samantha Hill (Kim Delaney) vertritt die Theorie, dass die vielen einzelnen Bruchlinien eines Tages aufeinander treffen könnten, was zur schlimmsten Katastrophe aller Zeiten führen würde. Als zuerst in Washington State und kurz danach in Südkalifornien Beben gemeldet werden, glaubt noch keiner an Hills Theorie. Doch dann häufen sich die gewaltigen Erdbewegungen. Von Alaska bis San Diego verwüsten Beben ganze Städte und die Beben werden immer stärker. Als dann auch noch die Westküste vom Rest des Kontinents wegbricht und eine Riesenflutwelle die Küstenregionen zu überrollen droht, greift Präsident Paul Hollister (Beau Bridges) zu einer drastischen Maßnahme.
It is not unusual for the earth on the west coast of America to shake from time to time. But experts have been warning for years of the 'Big One', the worst earthquake of all time. But only earthquake expert Dr. Samantha Hill (Kim Delaney) theorizes that the many individual fault lines could one day collide, leading to the worst catastrophe of all time. When quakes were reported first in Washington State and shortly afterwards in Southern California, no one believed Hill's theory. But then the enormous earth movements accumulate. From Alaska to San Diego, quakes devastate entire cities and the quakes are getting stronger and stronger. When the west coast breaks away from the rest of the continent and a huge tidal wave threatens to roll over the coastal regions, President Paul Hollister (Beau Bridges) resorts to a drastic measure.
