In diesem Film geht es nicht um die überbordende Gewalt in deutschen Jugendgefängnissen, nicht um das gnadenlose Scheitern des deutschen Justizvollzugssystems oder um die absolute Hilflosigkeit all derer, die von diesem System in Ketten gelegt werden. In 'Picco' geht es um uns selbst, als Teil einer Gesellschaft, die trainiert wurde, überall dort weg zu sehen, wo es weh tut. Und dieser Film tut nicht weh wegen der radikalen Darstellung physischer Gewalt, nicht wegen der schonungslosen Brutalität, den ständigen Demütigungen, den unfassbaren seelischen Grausamkeiten. Dieser Film tut weh, weil er uns mit unserem eigenen Versagen konfrontiert. Wir können diese wütenden Kinder nicht verleugnen, die Verantwortung für ihr Scheitern nicht ihnen selbst zuschreiben. Based on true events, 'Picco' (2010) tells the story of victims, not perpetrators. This film is not about the excessive violence in German juvenile prisons, not about the merciless failure of the German prison system or about the absolute helplessness of all those who are put in chains by this system. 'Picco' is about ourselves, as part of a society that has been trained to look the other way wherever it hurts. And this film doesn't hurt because of the radical depiction of physical violence, not because of the relentless brutality, the constant humiliation, the inconceivable mental cruelty. This film hurts because it confronts us with our own failures. We cannot deny these angry children, we cannot ascribe the responsibility for their failure to themselves. These children are angry with us. We ourselves have made it that. The only perpetrators in 'Picco' are us. That's what hurts us so much.
