Seit 35 Jahren lebt Vietnam-Veteran Lt. Jake Neeley (Danny Glover) zurückgezogen in einer einsamen Waldhütte. Sein einziger Kontakt zur Außenwelt sind die regelmäßigen Einkäufe bei der verwitweten Ladenbesitzerin Kate (Linda Hamilton). Seine Einsamkeit wird jedoch jäh beendet, als sein alter, unheilbar an Lungenkrebs erkrankter Kampfgefährte Henry Hocknell (David Strathairn) mit seiner halb-vietnamesischen Tochter Lenny (Zoë Weizenbaum) vor der Tür steht und ihn bittet, fortan auf seine Tochter aufzupassen. Doch Jake schreckt vor der Verantwortung zurück und lehnt ab. Nachts schleicht sich Henry daraufhin heimlich aus Jakes Hütte und lässt seine Tochter Lenny zurück. Von da an stellt das aufgeweckte Mädchen Jakes Leben auf den Kopf. Sie bringt ihn sogar dazu, sich mit anderen Kriegsveteranen zu treffen. Darunter auch Red (Ron Perlman), dessen Gesicht durch die Explosion einer Handgranate, die ein vietnamesisches Mädchen auf ihn geworfen hat, furchtbar entstellt wurde. Er projiziert seinen ganzen Hass auf Lenny, und Jake muss sich entscheiden: will er Lenny beschützen, oder überlässt er sie hilflos den Anfeindungen seines alten Kampfgefährten?

His only contact with the outside world is his regular shopping with the widowed shopkeeper Kate (Linda Hamilton). However, his loneliness is abruptly ended when his old comrade-in-arms Henry Hocknell (David Strathairn), who is terminally ill with lung cancer, shows up at the door with his half-Vietnamese daughter Lenny (Zoë Weizenbaum) and asks him to take care of his daughter from now on. But Jake shies away from responsibility and refuses. At night, Henry sneaks out of Jake's cabin, leaving his daughter Lenny behind. From then on, the bright girl turns Jake's life upside down. She even gets him to meet up with other war veterans. Among them is Red (Ron Perlman), whose face was terribly disfigured by the explosion of a hand grenade thrown at him by a Vietnamese girl. He projects all his hatred onto Lenny, and Jake has to decide: does he want to protect Lenny, or does he leave her helplessly to the hostility of his old comrade-in-arms?
