Sie sind mannshoch, intelligent - und sie fressen Menschen. Die Invasion der niederträchtigen Nachtschattengewächse beginnt in einer unscheinbaren Kleinstadt, und schon bald haben sie das ganze Land in ihrer Gewalt. Es stellt sich heraus, dass die furiosen Früchte aus einem Geheimlabor der Regierung entkommen sind. Jim Richardson (George Wilson), der Pressereferent des Präsidenten, setzt den Spezialagenten Mason Dixon (David Miller) auf den Fall an. Sowohl Dixon als auch sein Assistent Lieutenant Wilbur Finletter (Steve Peace) sind völlig überfordert und unfähig, die Nation vor der roten Gefahr zu beschützen - und Richardson weiß das. Schließlich hat er selbst die Tomatenattacke ins Rollen gebracht. Sein Ziel: die absolute Macht. Doch trotz aller Schwierigkeiten stellt sich der trottelige Dixon dem mordlüsternen Gemüse mutig in den Weg. So leicht gibt er den Kampf nicht auf. Während Richardson versucht, der Öffentlichkeit weiß zu machen, dass Tomatenplantagen weniger gefährlich seien als Atomkraftwerke, kommt Dixon seinem Ziel, die Monsterfrüchte auf eine ungefährliche Größe zurückzuschrumpfen, immer näher. Nachdem das Hightech-Waffenarsenal der Armee versagt hat, bleibt ihm nur noch eine Chance: eine schrecklich schnulzige Teenie-Ballade.

The world in the 70s. Everyone is talking about healthy eating. But one day, unsuspecting Americans have to learn how dangerous it can be to deal with vegetables: Without warning, hordes of huge tomatoes roll through the USA. Killer tomatoes! They are as tall as a man, intelligent - and they eat people. The invasion of the vile nightshade family begins in an inconspicuous small town, and soon they have the entire country in their power. It turns out that the furious fruits have escaped from a secret government laboratory. Jim Richardson (George Wilson), the president's press officer, puts special agent Mason Dixon (David Miller) on the case. Both Dixon and his assistant Lieutenant Wilbur Finletter (Steve Peace) are completely overwhelmed and unable to protect the nation from the Red Peril - and Richardson knows it. After all, he himself got the tomato attack rolling. His goal: absolute power. But despite all the difficulties, the goofy Dixon bravely stands in the way of the murderous vegetable. He does not give up the fight so easily. While Richardson tries to make the public know that tomato plantations are less dangerous than nuclear power plants, Dixon is getting closer and closer to his goal of shrinking the monster fruits back to a harmless size. After the army's high-tech arsenal of weapons has failed, he has only one chance left: a terribly cheesy teen ballad.
