The basis is Michel Houellebecq's controversial bestseller novel 'Soumission' and the theatre production at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg by Karin Beier. In his novel, Houellebecq paints a scenario that is as dark as it is provocative: the picture of a European identity crisis. In times of populism and increasing social division, it forces us to recognize that our values of freedom cannot be taken for granted.
