Vor Ort macht sich Catherine mit ihrer romantischen Vorstellung von einem selbstbestimmten Leben im Wilden Westen jedoch schnell Feinde. Vor allem Colonel Groves (Sam Rockwell) ist die selbstbewusste Witwe mit ihrer Sympathie und Engagement für die amerikanischen Ureinwohner ein Dorn im Auge. Mit allen Mitteln versucht er, die unbequeme Frau wieder loszuwerden. Häuptling Sitting Bull (Michael Greyeyes) hingegen lernt Catherine als einen friedfertigen und besonnenen Mann kennen, dessen Vertrauen und Zuneigung sie bald gewinnt. Sie beeindruckt ihn sogar so sehr, dass er der mutigen und unangepassten Malerin den indianischen Namen 'Frau geht voraus' gibt. Als Colonel Groves und seine Leute beginnen, die letzten Stammesmitglieder auszuhungern und zu vertreiben, muss Catherine sich endgültig entscheiden, wie weit sie im schicksalhaften Kampf um Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit bereit ist zu gehen...

Jahrhunderts ihrer Zeit weit voraus war. Mit unbändigem Mut stand sie für ihre Ideale ein, folgte ihrer Leidenschaft und kämpfte für mehr Menschlichkeit. Die grandiose Jessica Chastain (aus 'Molly's Game') verleiht dieser bewundernswerten Frau Stärke und Sanftheit zugleich. Der legendäre Sioux-Häuptling Sitting Bull, eindrucksvoll verkörpert vom Kanadier Michael Greyeyes ('American Gods'), lehrt sie in der unendlichen Weite des amerikanischen Westens vor allem eines: richtig zu leben. 'Tobi's Film' presents the historical drama 'The Woman Who Goes Ahead' aka 'Woman Walks Ahead', in which Jessica Chastain embodies the painter Catherine Weldon, who once portrayed 'Sitting Bull' (played by Michael Greyeyes) and campaigned for the rights of Native Americans: New York, in the spring of 1889. After a year of mourning for her late husband, painter Catherine Weldon (Jessica Chastain) decides that the time has finally come for a new beginning. Unimpressed by social convention and completely on her own, she embarks on the arduous and dangerous journey to 'North Dakota' with a clear goal in mind. She wants to portray the legendary Sioux chief 'Sitting Bull'. On site, however, Catherine quickly makes enemies with her romantic idea of a self-determined life in the Wild West. Colonel Groves (Sam Rockwell) in particular is a thorn in the side of the self-confident widow with her sympathy and commitment to the Native Americans. He tries by all means to get rid of the uncomfortable woman. Chief Sitting Bull (Michael Greyeyes), on the other hand, gets to know Catherine as a peaceful and level-headed man whose trust and affection she soon gains. She even impresses him so much that he gives the courageous and non-conformist painter the Indian name 'Woman Goes Ahead'. When Colonel Groves and his people begin to starve and expel the last members of the tribe, Catherine must finally decide how far she is willing to go in the fateful struggle for freedom and independence...
The historical epic 'The Woman Who Goes Ahead' (2017), staged by Susanna White (see, among others, 'Traitors Like Us' from 2015), is based on the biography of the artist and activist Catherine Weldon, who was far ahead of her time at the end of the 19th century. With irrepressible courage, she stood up for her ideals, followed her passion and fought for more humanity. The terrific Jessica Chastain (from 'Molly's Game') gives this admirable woman strength and gentleness at the same time. The legendary Sioux chief Sitting Bull, impressively embodied by Canadian Michael Greyeyes ('American Gods'), teaches her one thing above all else in the endless expanse of the American West: to live right. Other roles include newly crowned Oscar winner Sam Rockwell ('Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri') as an incorrigible US soldier, as well as Ciarán Hinds ('Red Sparrow'), Chaske Spencer ('Twilight' Saga) and Bill Camp ('Red Sparrow'). 'Woman Walks Ahead' is a poignant story of female emancipation and the struggle for freedom of a discriminated people, whose chief lives on in Catherine's artworks.
