Die junge Engländerin Judith Farrow (Julie Andrews) arbeitet für das Außenministerium ihres Landes und ist auf einer Karibikinsel im Urlaub. Hier verliebt sie sich in den gutaussehenden und überaus charmanten Militärattache Feodor Sverdlov (Omar Sharif), der die Belange der Sowjetunion vertritt. Der macht ihr zunächst auch Avancen, versucht dann aber, sie zur Spionage für sein Heimatland zu überreden. Judith ist verwirrt. Waren denn Feodors Gefühle nur gespielt? Von ihren Vorgesetzten bekommt sie einen unmissverständlichen Auftrag: auf die Liebesschwüre des Russen eingeben und seine Kontakte zur Spionage nutzen. Doch Gefühle kann man nicht verbieten. Inzwischen kann Feodor sein Herz nicht mehr hinter die Interessen seines Landes zurückstellen und steht offen zu seiner Liebe. Ein wunderbares Happy-End, wäre da nicht plötzlich dieser unbekannte Mann, ist er auch vom Geheimdienst? Aber wenn ja, von welchem?
