Es ist still geworden im Haus No. 2 in der Vorstadtsiedlung Mt. Roskill. Längst wird nicht mehr gefeiert, nicht einmal mehr gestritten. Aber heute will Nanna Maria (Ruby Dee), eine schon etwas in die Jahre gekommene Fidschi-Matriarchin, das ändern. Das Leben soll endlich zurückkehren in das Haus, in das sie einzog, als sie von Fidschi nach Auckland in Neuseeland auswanderte. Gerade ist sie wach geworden, geweckt durch einen Traum. Dieser Traum erinnert sie an die grandiosen Familienfeste, bei denen sie als Kind zu Gast gewesen war. Und ihr Entschluss steht fest: Sie wird ein Fest geben, wie es das Haus No. 2 seit langem nicht mehr erlebt hat. Und das noch heute. Ein Fest wie früher soll es sein, mit Gesang und Tanz und Gelächter. Und so trommelt die alte Dame ihre Enkelinnen und Enkeln zusammen, denn unter ihnen will sie einen Nachfolger bestimmen. Es gibt Wein, Gesang, Gelächter und Tanz - und auch der obligatorische Streit stellt sich bald ein. Während es zu dämmern anfängt, erwacht der Garten zum Leben. Nanna Maria sitzt an dem wunderbar gedeckten Tisch, umgeben von drei Generationen ihrer Familie und genießt es, seit Jahren mit ihnen wieder einmal zusammen zu sein. Genau das hatte sie sich erträumt. Und als sie dann verkündet, wen sie als ihren Nachfolger als Familienoberhaupt ausersehen hat, ist die Überraschung komplett...

It has become quiet in House No. 2 in the suburban settlement of Mt. Roskill. For a long time there has been no celebrating, not even arguing. But today, Nanna Maria (Ruby Dee), a somewhat aging Fijian matriarch, wants to change that. Life should finally return to the house she moved into when she emigrated from Fiji to Auckland in New Zealand. She has just woken up, awakened by a dream. This dream reminds her of the grandiose family celebrations at which she had been a guest as a child. And her decision is clear: she will give a party the likes of which House No. 2 has not experienced for a long time. And that is still the case today. It should be a festival like in the old days, with singing and dancing and laughter. And so the old lady rounds up her grandchildren, because she wants to appoint a successor among them. There is wine, singing, laughter and dancing - and the obligatory argument soon sets in. As it begins to dawn, the garden comes to life. Nanna Maria sits at the wonderfully set table, surrounded by three generations of her family and enjoys being with them for the first time in years. That's exactly what she had dreamed of. And when she then announces who she has chosen as her successor as head of the family, the surprise is complete...
