'Orlando' (1992), Sally Potters formvollendete Verfilmung des Romans von Virginia Woolf, wurde vielfach ausgezeichnet und für 2 'Oscars' nominiert. Tilda Swinton überzeugt in Potters zeitloser Adaption an der Seite von Billy Zane in der Rolle des Shelmerdine als betörend androgyner Orlando mit viel Charme, Witz und Poesie. 'Orlando' feierte seine Weltpremiere am 1. September 1992 im Rahmen der Internationalen Filmfestspielen in Venedig und wurde noch im selben Jahr zum 'Young European Film of the Year' des europäischen Filmpreises gekürt sowie 1994 bei den 'Oscars' für das beste Kostümdesign und das beste Szenenbild nominiert. Eine Geschichte über die Suche nach Liebe, und zugleich auch ein ironischer Tanz durch die englische Geschichte. Der Film geht auf zeitgenössische Bedenken in Bezug auf Geschlecht und Identität ein und ist dem Geist von Virginia Woolf bemerkenswert treu, passt aber auch die ursprüngliche Geschichte gekonnt an, um ihr eine auffällige, filmische Form zu geben.
