Paris, in den 60er Jahren. Der in der Seine-Metropole lebende amerikanische Schriftsteller Bill Willis (Kris Kristofferson) und seine Frau Marcella (Barbara Hershey) adoptieren den siebenjährigen Heimjungen Benoit, den alle nur 'Little Billy' nennen. Charlotte Anne, genannt 'Channe' (Leelee Sobieski), die leibliche Tochter der Willis', ist von ihrem neuen Bruder wenig begeistert, doch die liebevolle und harmonische Atmosphäre innerhalb der Familie sorgt merklich für Entspannung. Bald ist Billy für Channe nicht nur ein Bruder, sondern ihr bester Freund. Eines Tages fasst Bill Willis zum Entsetzen seiner Familie den Entschluss, wieder in die USA zurückzukehren. Für Channe und Billy beginnt nun ein neuer, schwerer Lebensabschnitt: Gefangen zwischen europäischer und US-Kultur, zwischen traditionellen und modernen Lebensmustern, müssen sie um ihr persönliches Glück und den Fortbestand der Familie kämpfen.

Paris, in the 60s. The American writer Bill Willis (Kris Kristofferson), who lives in the metropolis on the Seine, and his wife Marcella (Barbara Hershey) adopt the seven-year-old home boy Benoit, whom everyone calls 'Little Billy'. Charlotte Anne, called 'Channe' (Leelee Sobieski), Willis' biological daughter, is not very enthusiastic about her new brother, but the loving and harmonious atmosphere within the family noticeably relaxes. Soon Billy is not only a brother to Channe, but her best friend. One day, to the horror of his family, Bill Willis decides to return to the USA. For Channe and Billy, a new, difficult phase of life now begins: Caught between European and US culture, between traditional and modern life patterns, they have to fight for their personal happiness and the continued existence of the family.
