Mit ihrer Kunst und ihrem Privatleben stand der Opernstar Maria Callas zu Lebzeiten stark im Fokus der Öffentlichkeit. 40 Jahre nach ihrem Tod erzählt die Ausnahmekünstlerin im Dokumentarfilm 'Maria by Callas' ihre Geschichte erstmals in ihren eigenen Worten. Dabei sind es weniger die Meilensteine ihrer Karriere, die die sensible Dokumentation beleuchtet, als vielmehr das, was diese besondere Frau in ihrem Tiefsten bewegte und welche Resümees sie aus den Ereignissen ihres Lebens zog. Sei es der Rausschmiss aus der 'Metropolitan Opera', die intensive, wenn auch schwierige Freundschaft und Liebe zu Aristoteles Onassis, die Rückkehr auf die Bühne, der Druck, die Verausgabung oder das amivalente Schicksal mit solch einer Begabung gesegnet zu sein. Aus mannigfachem Archivmaterial webte Regisseur Tom Volf ein sehr persönliches Porträt des Weltstars. Den roten Faden bildet ein unveröffentlichtes TV-Interview von David Frost aus dem Jahre 1970. Um die Themen dieses Gesprächs arrangiert Volf einen immensen Reichtum an unterschiedlichsten Zeugnissen wie private Fotos und Videos, Aufzeichnungen ihrer Auftritte und Mediendokumente. In TV- oder Radiointerviews oder auch in ihren Briefen - in der deutschen Fassung gesprochen von Eva Mattes, im Französischen von Fanny Ardant - immer sind es die Worte von Callas selbst, die ihr Leben erzählen. Kunstvoll vervollständigt wird die Erzählung durch insgesamt 10 ausgesungene Arien. 'Maria by Callas' ist weit mehr als ein klassischer Dokumentarfilm: Volf wirft einen Blick in die Seele einer der bedeutendsten Sängerinnen überhaupt, die mit ihrer Berühmtheit immer haderte. Darüber hinaus ist die raffiniert arrangierte Collage auch Zeitzeugnis einer großen Ära und zeigt Aufnahmen berühmter Weggefährten der Operndiva wie Grace von Monaco, Luchino Visconti oder Elizabeth Taylor.

With her art and private life, the opera star Maria Callas was in the public eye during her lifetime. 40 years after her death, the exceptional artist tells her story in her own words for the first time in the documentary 'Maria by Callas'. It is not so much the milestones of her career that the sensitive documentary illuminates, but rather what moved this special woman in her deepest depths and what summaries she drew from the events of her life. Be it the expulsion from the 'Metropolitan Opera', the intense, albeit difficult friendship and love for Aristotle Onassis, the return to the stage, the pressure, the exhaustion or the amivalent fate of being blessed with such a talent. From a variety of archive material, director Tom Volf weaved a very personal portrait of the world star. The common thread is an unpublished TV interview by David Frost from 1970. Volf arranges an immense wealth of different testimonies around the topics of this conversation, such as private photos and videos, recordings of her appearances and media documents. In TV or radio interviews or even in her letters - spoken in the German version by Eva Mattes, in French by Fanny Ardant - it is always the words of Callas herself that tell her life. The narrative is artfully completed by a total of 10 sung arias. 'Maria by Callas' is much more than a classic documentary: Volf takes a look into the soul of one of the most important singers of all time, who has always struggled with her celebrity. In addition, the cleverly arranged collage is also a testimony to a great era and shows photographs of famous companions of the opera diva such as Grace of Monaco, Luchino Visconti and Elizabeth Taylor.
