Wolf Biermann has always polarized, even today. The poetic power of his songs has caused small and large political earthquakes for over 60 years. And so music is the starting point for approaching Biermann, the personality of the century. The camera accompanies the 90-year-old at numerous meetings with young artists, politicians and his family, and places the images he obtains in a collage of contemporary documents, including previously unpublished archive images. The result is a rousing and very personal kaleidoscope of life in five different versions of Germany. A unique biography. German-German history is so connected with no living artist as Biermann...
'Biermann' (2026) is a cinema documentary by European Film Award and Golden Globe winner Jens Meurer (see previously 'An Impossible Project - The more digital the world, the more analogue the dreams' 2020 and 'Seaside Special - A Love Letter to Great Britain' 2023 here in the distribution programme) about the life and work of the poet and singer-songwriter Wolf Biermann. The film traces his biography as an immediate and up-close retrospective and combines personal memories with contemporary political history. The focus is on Biermann's origins, his turn to music, his work in the GDR, the Cologne concert of 1976 and its consequences, and his artistic work up to the present day. The film approaches its protagonist through music, language and historical materials. Archive footage, contemporary documents and excerpts from the Cologne concert of 1976 and the concert in November 2025 form the backbone of the narrative and make it clear how closely Biermann's work is linked to Germany's political upheavals. This feature film was produced by 'Instant Film' in co-production with 'Zeitsprung Pictures', 'zero fiction film', 'WDR' and 'Clouds Hill', funded by MOIN Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the 'DFFF'.
