Auch wenn alle gegen ihn sind, Theo Gromberg (Marius Müller-Westernhagen), ein junger Mann aus dem Ruhrgebiet, nimmt es mit ihnen auf. Der charmante Verlierertyp, der 'Kamikaze' oder auch 'Zocker-Theo' genannt wird, macht sich nichts aus seinem Pech. Sein größter Traum ist, sich mit seinem Freund Enno Goldini (Guido Gagliardi) selbständig zu machen. Doch mangelt es dazu vorerst an Kapital, das mittels Pferdewetten beschafft werden soll. Als dies nicht klappt, lässt sich Theo auf ein Pokerspiel mit Jussuf (Riad Gholmie), dem Türken, ein, den er für ein leichtgläubiges Opfer hält. Zu spät merkt Zocker-Theo, dass er einen Pokerprofi vor sich hat. Erneut muss er draufzahlen, doch es kommt der Tag, an dem es der charmante Pechvogel allen zeigt...
'Theo, der Zocker - Aufforderung zum Tanz' (1977) ist ein herrlicher TV-Film um einen sympathischen Antihelden, unglaublich frisch inszeniert und voller origineller, unverbrauchter Ideen. Diese hochamüsante Komödie, die Wildwest-Elemente mit Ruhrpott-Flair verbindet, ist zu Recht absoluter Kult. Marius Müller-Westernhagen wurde mit dieser Produktion äußerst populär und legte damit den Grundstein für den Kinofilm 'Theo gegen den Rest der Welt', der an 'Aufforderung zum Tanz' anschloss und sowohl vor als auch hinter der Kamera mit den selben Beteiligten aufwartete. Regisseur Peter F. Bringmann sagte vor der Ausstrahlung über seinen Film: "Es wäre schön, wenn sich viele junge Leute den Film ansehen würden. Ich glaube, dass sie die Geschichte von Zocker-Theo und die Art, in der sie erzählt wird, in der in deftigem Revier-Deutsch miteinander gesprochen wird, sicherlich am ehesten verstehen".

Even though everyone is against him, Theo Gromberg (Marius Müller-Westernhagen), a young man from the Ruhr area, takes on them. The charming loser type, who is called 'Kamikaze' or 'Gambler Theo', doesn't care about his bad luck. His biggest dream is to start his own business with his friend Enno Goldini (Guido Gagliardi). But for the time being, there is a lack of capital, which is to be procured by means of horse betting. When this doesn't work out, Theo gets involved in a poker game with Yussuf (Riad Gholmie), the Turk, whom he considers a gullible victim. Too late, gambler Theo realizes that he has a poker pro in front of him. Once again he has to pay more, but the day comes when the charming unlucky man shows it to everyone...
'Theo, the Gambler - Invitation to Dance' (1977) is a wonderful TV movie about a sympathetic antihero, incredibly freshly staged and full of original, fresh ideas. This highly amusing comedy, which combines Wild West elements with Ruhr flair, is rightly an absolute cult. Marius Müller-Westernhagen became extremely popular with this production and thus laid the foundation for the feature film 'Theo gegen den Rest der Welt', which followed on from 'Invitation to Dance' and featured the same participants both in front of and behind the camera. Director Peter F. Bringmann said about his film before the broadcast: "It would be nice if many young people would watch the film. I think that they are certainly the most likely to understand the story of Zocker-Theo and the way in which it is told, in which they speak to each other in hearty German on the territory."
