Frei nach dem Motto 'Kopfstand statt Ruhestand' wollen Ilse, Alfred, Jirí und Gabre auch über 80-jährig noch hoch hinaus. Alfred, der 100-jährige Diskuswerfer aus Wien, Jirí, der 82-jährige Hochspringer aus Tschechien, Ilse, die 85-jährige Kugelstoßerin aus Kiel und Herbert (93) aus Stockholm – als Lebensmittelpunkt verbindet sie alle der Sport. Oder besser: der Leistungssport. Ihr großes Ziel: die Qualifikation für die Weltmeisterschaft im finnischen Lahti, der Olymp des Seniorensports. Beim Hochsprung, Diskuswerfen und Kugelstoßen laufen sie zur Hochform auf und fürchten weder Tod noch Teufel bei dem Versuch, das Siegertreppchen zu erklimmen. Mit Schicksalsergebenheit aber auch mit Trotz nehmen sie den Kampf gegen den eigenen Körper auf, gegen die Zeit und vor allem gegen die Konkurrenz...
Der Dokumentarfilm 'Herbstgold' (2010) erzählt von der Erfüllung eines Traums. Regisseur Jan Tenhaven wirft einen liebevollen, neugierigen und respektvollen Blick auf die Welt des Seniorensports. Er porträtiert die bejahrten Sportler, die es auf der Zielgeraden des Lebens noch einmal wissen wollen und mit Ehrgeiz und Humor der eigenen Vergänglichkeit trotzen. 'Herbstgold' ist eine lebensbejahende Hommage an das Leben, wie es sein kann: nicht glatt und faltenfrei, aber voller Humor und Willenskraft. Das Alter mit all seinen Widersprüchen ist für den Film nicht nur Anlass zu Sorge, pessimistischen Zukunftsaussichten und Statistiken, sondern auch Gelegenheit, sich zentralen Tabus auf witzige und selbstironische Art zu nähern.

Alfred, the 100-year-old discus thrower from Vienna, Jirí, the 82-year-old high jumper from the Czech Republic, Ilse, the 85-year-old shot putter from Kiel and Herbert (93) from Stockholm – they are all connected by sport as the centre of their lives. Or rather: competitive sport. Her big goal: to qualify for the World Championships in Lahti, Finland, the Olympus of senior sports. In the high jump, discus throw and shot put, they are in top form and fear neither death nor the devil in their attempt to climb the podium. With resignation to fate, but also with defiance, they take up the fight against their own bodies, against time and above all against the competition...
The documentary 'Herbstgold' (2010) tells the story of the fulfilment of a dream. Director Jan Tenhaven takes a loving, curious and respectful look at the world of senior sports. He portrays the elderly athletes who want to do it again on the home stretch of life and defy their own transience with ambition and humor. 'Herbstgold' is a life-affirming homage to life as it can be: not smooth and wrinkle-free, but full of humour and willpower. For the film, old age with all its contradictions is not only a cause for concern, pessimistic future prospects and statistics, but also an opportunity to approach central taboos in a witty and self-deprecating way.
