Mario (Thomas Prenn) tanzt für sein Leben gern, aber in dem streng katholischen Bergdorf, in dem er mit seiner Mutter wohnt, hat der sensible junge Mann damit keine Zukunftsperspektive. Stattdessen hält er sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs über Wasser und betäubt seinen Frust mit Drogen. Als ihm sein Freund Lenz (Noah Saavedra), dem als Winzersohn andere Türen offenstehen, mit nach Rom nimmt, sieht Mario seine Chance auf eine Tanzkarriere endlich gekommen. Doch in einer Schwulenbar werden die beiden Opfer eines Terroranschlags, Lenz stirbt. Zurück im Dorf hat Mario das Gefühl, dass sein Tod die kleinere Lücke hinterlassen hätte. Halt findet er ausgerechnet bei dem Moslem Nadim (Josef Mohamed) und dessen gläubigen Brüdern...
In ihrem Regiedebüt 'Hochwald' (2020) erzählt Regisseurin Evi Romen inmitten der trügerischen Idylle der Südtiroler Berge von einem jungen Mann, der an dem Ort, in den er hineingeboren wurde, vollkommen fehl am Platz ist. Er muss raus aus der Enge, in ein anderes, freieres Leben, sonst bleibt er für immer ein Verlorener. Marios Geschichte verknüpft sie mit dem Thema terroristische Bedrohung und der damit verbundenen Gefahr der Stigmatisierung von Menschen, die anders glauben. Für ihr vielschichtiges und bildgewaltiges Außenseiterdrama, in dem Newcomer Thomas Prenn und Noah Saavedra (aus 'Egon Schiele - Tod und Mädchen') glänzen, wurde sie u.a. mit dem 'Goldenen Auge' des Zürich-Filmfestivals und dem 'Große Diagonale' Preis ausgezeichnet. Beim Österreichischen Filmpreis 2021 war 'Hochwald' in neun Kategorien nominiert, u.a. als bester Film. Prenn erhielt für sein mitreißendes Porträt den Preis als bester Hauptdarsteller.

In her directorial debut 'Hochwald' (2020), director Evi Romen tells the story of a young man who is completely out of place in the place he was born into, in the midst of the deceptive idyll of the South Tyrolean mountains. He has to get out of the confinement, into a different, freer life, otherwise he will remain a lost person forever. Mario's story links it to the topic of terrorist threats and the associated danger of stigmatizing people who believe differently. For her multi-layered and visually stunning outsider drama, in which newcomer Thomas Prenn and Noah Saavedra (from 'Egon Schiele - Death and Maiden') shine, she was awarded the 'Golden Eye' of the Zurich Film Festival and the 'Great Diagonale' Prize, among others. At the Austrian Film Awards 2021, 'Hochwald' was nominated in nine categories, including best film. Prenn received the award for best actor for his rousing portrait.
