Three respectable but cunning men from the water's edge smuggle two crates of rum. Annette, the landlady of the "Friesenkrug", is in cahoots with them - out of love for the young fisherman Dirk. Great difficulties are caused to them by the new zealous customs officer Timpe. But he also falls in love: with Guste, the daughter of the humorous old smuggler August von Katjendörp.
