Ila (Nimrat Kaur) möchte ihrer Ehe wieder mehr Würze verleihen. Mit ihren Kochkünsten will sie ihren Mann zurückgewinnen, denn die Hausfrau in der indischen Millionenstadt Mumbai fühlt sich seit geraumer Zeit vernachlässigt. Doch die ganz besondere Lunchbox, die sie ihm für die Mittagspause vorbereitet, gerät über die Dabbawallas - Lieferanten, die tagtäglich Tausende von Mumbaier Ehemännern mit den Köstlichkeiten ihrer Frauen beliefern - irrtümlich zu Saajan (Irrfan Khan), einem Büroangestellten, der kurz vor dem Ende seines Berufslebens steht und genau wie Ila eine einsame Großstadtseele ist. Als ihr Mann nicht reagiert, legt die verwunderte Ila am folgenden Tag eine Nachricht in die nächste Lunchbox und erhält eine Antwort von Saajan. Ila wiederum antwortet ihm, und so beginnen sie sich regelmäßig Botschaften zu schicken, in denen sie sich dem anderen immer mehr offenbaren. Sie gestehen sich ihre Einsamkeit und ihre Ängste, ihre Erinnerungen und ihre kleinen Freuden. Und spenden einander Trost und geben sich Halt in einer Stadt, die schon so viele Träume und Hoffnungen ihrer Bewohner unter sich begraben hat. Sie haben sich noch nie gesehen, doch mit ihren Botschaften beginnen sie, sich in die realen Leben des anderen zu schleichen...

Ila (Nimrat Kaur) wants to spice up her marriage again. She wants to win back her husband with her cooking skills, because the housewife in the Indian metropolis of Mumbai has felt neglected for some time. But the very special lunchbox she prepares for his lunch break ends up in Saajan (Irrfan Khan), an office worker who is about to end up with the end of his professional life and, just like Illa, a lonely city soul to thousands of Mumbai husbands every day. When her husband does not react, the astonished Ila puts a message in the next lunchbox the following day and receives an answer from Saajan. Ila in turn answers him, and so they begin to send each other regular messages in which they reveal themselves more and more to the other. They confess their loneliness and their fears, their memories and their small joys. And they give each other comfort and support in a city that has already buried so many dreams and hopes of its inhabitants. They have never seen each other, but with their messages they begin to sneak into each other's real lives...
