Detektive Joe Miller (Peter Krause), ein alleinerziehender Vater und integerer Polizist, wird eines Tages mit einer Situation konfrontiert, die schon bald sein komplettes Leben auf den Kopf stellen soll. Im Zuge der Ermittlungen zu einem Mordfall wird ihm von einem sterbenden jungen Mann der Schlüssel für ein Motelzimmer zugesteckt. Dieser Schlüssel birgt ein Geheimnis: Man kann damit jede beliebige Türe öffnen und findet dahinter stets ein ordentlich aufgeräumtes Motelzimmer vor. Verlässt man das Zimmer wieder durch die Tür und stellt sich in seiner Fantasie ein Ziel vor, so bringt einen das Zimmer genau dorthin. Besagtes Zimmer ist im Jahre 1961 einfach vom Erdboden verschwunden und befindet sich seitdem offenbar in einer parallelen Zeit- und Raumebene. Doch was als interessantes Phänomen beginnt, entpuppt sich schon bald als mörderisches Spiel. Nicht nur der Schlüssel, sondern alle weiteren Gegenstände aus dem verschwundenen Zimmer besitzen besondere Eigenschaften und werden seit Jahren von einem mysteriösen Geheimbund gejagt - ein blutiger, brutaler Kampf ist daraus entstanden. Da der Schlüssel eines der wertvollsten Objekte darstellt, steht Detektive Miller fortan ganz oben auf der Liste der Gejagten. Als einer der Objektjäger Millers achtjährige Tochter Anna (Elle Fanning) entführt, um die Herausgabe des Schlüssels zu erpressen, verschwindet sie auf der Flucht vor ihren Entführern in dem geheimnisvollen Zimmer und gelangt in ein paralleles Universum. Miller ist außer sich und hat nur noch ein Ziel vor Augen: Er muss unbedingt seine Tochter wieder finden, koste es was es wolle.

Detective Joe Miller (Peter Krause), a single father and police officer with integrity, is one day confronted with a situation that will soon turn his entire life upside down. In the course of the investigation into a murder case, a dying young man slips him the key to a motel room. This key holds a secret: you can use it to open any door and always find a neatly tidy motel room behind it. If you leave the room through the door and imagine a destination in your imagination, the room will take you exactly there. The room in question simply disappeared from the face of the earth in 1961 and has apparently been in a parallel time and space plane since then. But what begins as an interesting phenomenon soon turns out to be a murderous game. Not only the key, but all other items from the missing room have special properties and have been hunted by a mysterious secret society for years - a bloody, brutal fight has ensued. Since the key is one of the most valuable objects, Detective Miller is henceforth at the top of the list of the hunted. When one of the object hunters kidnaps Miller's eight-year-old daughter Anna (Elle Fanning) in order to extort the key, she disappears into the mysterious room while fleeing from her kidnappers and ends up in a parallel universe. Miller is beside himself and has only one goal in mind: he must find his daughter again, no matter what the cost.
