Thor (Baldur Einarsson) und Kristján (Blær Hinriksson) leben in 'Borgarfjörður eystri', einem abgelegenen Fischerdörfchen in Island, und sind beste Freunde. Weil zu Hause meistens dicke Luft herrscht - Thor muss sich mit seinen älteren Schwestern herumärgern, Kristján mit seinem ständig betrunkenen Vater - sind die Jungs am liebsten draußen unterwegs. Sie vertreiben sich die Zeit beim Fischefangen und beim Rumhängen auf dem Schrottplatz. Als sich Thor in die hübsche Beta (Diljá Valsdóttir) verknallt, hilft Kristján ihm natürlich, dem Mädchen näher zu kommen. Doch allmählich muss sich Kristján eingestehen, dass seine Zuneigung zu Thor mehr als nur Freundschaft ist. Der isländische Regisseur Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson wurde für seine Kurzfilme weltweit auf Festivals gefeiert und mit über 50 Preisen ausgezeichnet. In seinem Langfilmdebüt 'Herzstein' (2016) erzählt er von der innigen Kameradschaft zweier Jungen und vom sexuellen Erwachen, das die Freunde in unterschiedliche Richtungen führt. Die Weite der isländischen Natur, die der norwegische Kameramann Sturla Brandth Grøvlen ('Victoria') mit atemberaubenden Bildern einfängt, ist ein Fluchtraum für die Jugendlichen vor der reglementierten Welt der Erwachsenen, aber auch ein Abbild von Kristjáns Isolation. Für sein vielschichtiges Porträt einer unbändigen und zugleich schwer verletzlichen Freundschaft wurde Guðmundsson in Venedig mit dem 'Queer Lion' geehrt. Anschließend dreht er das isländische Drama 'Beautiful Beings' (2022), das auf der Berlinale ausgezeichnet wurde.

Because the air is usually thick at home - Thor has to deal with his older sisters, Kristján with his constantly drunk father - the boys prefer to be outside. They pass the time catching fish and hanging out at the junkyard. When Thor falls in love with the pretty Beta (Diljá Valsdóttir), Kristján naturally helps him to get closer to the girl. But gradually, Kristján has to admit to himself that his affection for Thor is more than just friendship. In the small village, where nothing stays secret for long and being gay still has something monstrous about it, this puts the relationship of the two boys to a hard test...
Icelandic director Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson has been celebrated for his short films at festivals around the world and has won over 50 awards. In his feature film debut 'Herzstein' (2016), he tells of the intimate camaraderie of two boys and of the sexual awakening that leads the friends in different directions. The vastness of Icelandic nature, captured with breathtaking images by Norwegian cinematographer Sturla Brandth Grøvlen ('Victoria'), is an escape space for the young people from the regimented world of adults, but also a reflection of Kristján's isolation. For his multi-layered portrait of an irrepressible and at the same time severely vulnerable friendship, Guðmundsson was honored with the 'Queer Lion' in Venice. He then shoots the Icelandic drama 'Beautiful Beings' (2022), which won an award at the Berlinale.
