'Another Earth' war ein durchschlagender Erfolg auf dem diesjährigen 'Sundance Film Festival' und gewann sowohl den Alfred P. Sloan Preis als bester Film, der sich mit wissenschaftlichen und technologischen Themen auseinandersetzt, als auch den Spezialpreis der Jury als bestes Drama. If you could meet a different version of yourself, what would you say to that? What if you got a second chance at a life like this - only differently. In his intimate and provocative feature film debut 'Another Earth', Mike Cahill tells the story of Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling), a highly gifted young woman trying to make amends for a terrible tragedy, with relentless candor. She lives in a world just like ours. But then, most unexpectedly, a very similar planet to ours appears in the sky overnight, provisionally named 'Earth 2'. Like a huge, all-reflecting mirror, it hangs over us. For Rhoda, this strange, ghostly planet and its parallel reality, which the scientists suspect, is her last hope. A terrible accident has destroyed her dream of becoming an astrophysicist. She has lost all sense of her future. Only the confrontation with the past keeps her alive. And so one day Rhoda stands at the door of the renowned composer John Burroughs (William Mapother), the man whose life she has irrevocably changed. They are both completely uprooted, suspicious and full of doubts about who they actually are. And they fall in love with each other, entering into a highly unusual, risky relationship. When Rhoda gets the unexpected chance to travel to 'Earth 2', the hidden truth between them comes to light and an elementary question arises: What if the greatest mystery in the universe is ourselves?
'Another Earth' was a resounding success at this year's Sundance Film Festival, winning both the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Best Film that explores scientific and technological issues and the Special Jury Prize for Best Drama. The film was directed by Mike Cahill and written by Cahill and Brit Marling.
