Ein Jahrtausend deutscher Geschichte in einer zehnteiligen Dokumentarreihe: Das ZDF spannt mit dem Programmschwerpunkt 'Die Deutschen' den historischen Bogen von den Anfängen unter Otto dem Großen im 10. Jahrhundert bis zur Ausrufung der ersten deutschen Republik durch Philipp Scheidemann im November 1918. Wie die deutsche Vielfalt erst über Jahrhunderte zur Vereinigung führte, wie sich das Ringen um Einheit und Freiheit in der Mitte Europas gestaltete, ist in der bislang aufwändigsten Dokumentarreihe zur deutschen Geschichte dargestellt. Die entscheidenden Wendepunkte wurden, eingebettet in dokumentarische Sequenzen, szenisch rekonstruiert. Insgesamt kamen - neben namhaften Schauspielern - mehrere hundert Komparsen zum Einsatz. Fast fünfhundert hochkarätige 3D-Grafiken und Computeranimationen sowie eindrucksvolle Luftaufnahmen von historischen Schauplätzen und Landschaften machen die Filme zu einem Erlebnis. Eine bewegende Zeitreise in ein Land mit wechselvoller Geschichte.

A millennium of German history in a ten-part documentary series: With its programme focus 'The Germans', ZDF spans the historical arc from the beginnings under Otto the Great in the 10th century to the proclamation of the first German Republic by Philipp Scheidemann in November 1918. How German diversity only led to unification over centuries, how the struggle for unity and freedom in the middle of Europe took shape, is presented in the most elaborate documentary series on German history to date. The decisive turning points were reconstructed scenically, embedded in documentary sequences. In total - in addition to well-known actors - several hundred extras were used. Almost five hundred top-class 3D graphics and computer animations as well as impressive aerial shots of historical locations and landscapes make the films an experience.
