Bis heute lagern zehntausende menschliche Gebeine aus ehemaligen Kolonien in deutschen Museen. Bis heute ist unklar, wie sie identifiziert und zurückgeführt werden können. 'Das leere Grab' folgt zwei Familien auf ihrer mühsamen Suche nach ihren Vorfahren. Im Süden Tansanias begibt sich der junge Anwalt John Mbano mit seiner Frau Cesilia Mbano auf die Spuren seines Urgroßvaters, der vor über 100 Jahren von der deutschen Kolonialarmee hingerichtet wurde. Der Schädel seines Ahnen wurde damals zu rassistischen 'Forschungszwecken' nach Deutschland gebracht; die Familie wird bis heute von diesem Schmerz heimgesucht. Ähnlich geht es Felix Kaaya und Ernest Kaaya, im Norden Tansanias kämpfen sie um die Rückführung der Gebeine ihres Vorfahren und begeben sich dafür in die Metropole 'Dar es Salaam'. Beide Familien ringen mit dem Dickicht deutscher und tansanischer Bürokratie, erhalten aber auch Unterstützung von Aktivisten wie Mnyaka Sururu Mboro und Konradin Kunze, die in Deutschland Sichtbarkeit für das Thema schaffen. Mit deren Hilfe werden die Mbanos schließlich im Auswärtigen Amt in Berlin empfangen, und dann kommt sogar Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier in ihre Heimatstadt, um sich für das zugefügte Leid zu entschuldigen. Das Grab jedoch ist immer noch leer...
In ihrem Kino-Dokumentarfilm 'Das leere Grab' (2024) erzählt das deutsch-tansanische Regieduo Agnes Lisa Wegner und Cece Mlay von den Spuren und Traumata, die die einstige deutsche Kolonialherrschaft in tansanischen Familien und Communities bis heute hinterlassen hat - und von der Stärke und Selbstermächtigung der Hinterbliebenen, die sich hartnäckig für eine vollständige Aufklärung einsetzen. 'Das leere Grab' wirft Licht auf ein - auch filmisch - bisher kaum beleuchtetes Kapitel deutscher Geschichte und liefert damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zu der längst überfälligen Aufarbeitung deutscher Kolonialverbrechen.

To this day, tens of thousands of human bones from former colonies are stored in German museums. To this day, it is unclear how they can be identified and repatriated. 'The Empty Tomb' follows two families on their arduous search for their ancestors. In southern Tanzania, the young lawyer John Mbano and his wife Cesilia Mbano follow in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, who was executed by the German colonial army over 100 years ago. At that time, the skull of his ancestor was brought to Germany for racist 'research purposes'; the family is still haunted by this pain today. Felix Kaaya and Ernest Kaaya feel the same way, in northern Tanzania they fight for the repatriation of the bones of their ancestor and go to the metropolis 'Dar es Salaam' for this purpose. Both families struggle with the thicket of German and Tanzanian bureaucracy, but also receive support from activists such as Mnyaka Sururu Mboro and Konradin Kunze, who create visibility for the issue in Germany. With their help, the Mbanos are finally received at the Foreign Office in Berlin, and then even Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier comes to their hometown to apologize for the suffering inflicted. The tomb, however, is still empty...
In their feature documentary 'The Empty Grave' (2024), the German-Tanzanian directing duo Agnes Lisa Wegner and Cece Mlay tell of the traces and traumas that former German colonial rule has left behind in Tanzanian families and communities to this day - and of the strength and self-empowerment of the bereaved, who are stubbornly committed to a complete investigation. 'The Empty Grave' sheds light on a chapter of German history that has so far hardly been illuminated - even on film - and thus makes an important contribution to the long overdue reappraisal of German colonial crimes.
