Ein 14-jähriger Junge zieht mit seinen Eltern aus der verträumten Idylle eines Dorfes in das hauptstädtische Neubaugebiet Berlin-Marzahn: Stefan (Axel Bunke) hält nicht viel vom Umzug in die Stadt, musste er doch dafür die Beschaulichkeit seines heimatlichen Dorfes, seine Großmutter, seine Freunde, die Spielplätze in der freien Natur verlassen. Nun, angekommen in Berlin-Marzahn, hat die Familie zwar Warmwasser und andere Wohnkomforts, allerdings bietet die neue Wohnung auch den Ausblick auf eine mondähnliche Landschaft. Tiefe Baugräben, in die Höhe ragende Bauskelette, lärmendes Baugerät - das ist der neue Spielplatz Stefans. Auch die Menschen in dieser Umgebung taugen ihm wenig. Der neue Freund Hubert (Mathias Müller), ein eingeschüchtertes Schlüsselkind, von seinen arbeitenden Eltern regelmäßig alleingelassen und an die Luft gesetzt, macht ihm mehr Probleme als Freude. Der neue Feind, auch 'Windjacke' (Sven Martinek) genannt, weiß die Erwachsenen einzulullen, beugt sich scheinbar deren teils widersinnigen Verboten, um nur freie Hand zu haben für seine eigenen Umtriebe. Dumm nur, dass auch Stefan unter ihnen zu leiden hat...

Das Gespann Zschoche (Regie) und Plenzdorf (Drehbuch) drehte einen Film über Heranwachsende in der Großstadt und erntete dafür herbe Kritik in der DDR. Die neuen Wohnblöcke muteten nämlich nicht paradiesisch an, sondern bedeuteten besonders für Jugendliche eine verlorene Kindheit, fern jeder 'Insel der Schwäne'.

A 14-year-old boy moves with his parents from the dreamy idyll of a village to the capital's new development area Berlin-Marzahn: Stefan (Axel Bunke) doesn't think much of moving to the city, as he had to leave the tranquillity of his home village, his grandmother, his friends, the playgrounds in the great outdoors. Now, having arrived in Berlin-Marzahn, the family has hot water and other living comforts, but the new apartment also offers a view of a moon-like landscape. Deep construction trenches, towering skeletons, noisy construction equipment - this is Stefan's new playground. The people in this environment are also of little use to him. The new friend Hubert (Mathias Müller), an intimidated key child, regularly left alone by his working parents and put out into the air, causes him more problems than joy. The new enemy, also known as the 'windbreaker' (Sven Martinek), knows how to lull the adults, apparently bowing to their sometimes absurd prohibitions in order to have a free hand for his own activities. It's just a shame that Stefan also has to suffer from them...
Sven Martinek in one of his first roles in 'Island of the Swans' on DVD. The team of Zschoche (director) and Plenzdorf (screenplay) made a film about adolescents in the big city and earned harsh criticism in the GDR. The new apartment blocks did not seem paradisiacal, but meant a lost childhood, especially for young people, far away from any 'island of swans'.
