Vor 100 Jahren irgendwo in Japan: Die Einwohner eines kleinen Dorfes nahe des Dämonenteichs (Demon Pond) leiden unter einer schweren Dürre. Eines Abends kommt ein Mann am abgeschiedenen Haus des jungen Akira, Hüter des hiesigen Glockenturms, und seiner Frau Yuri vorbei.
Der Fremde gibt sich als Gakuen zu erkennen, ein alter Freund aus Schulzeiten, der sich auf die Suche nach Akira begeben hat, nachdem dieser einige Jahre zuvor spurlos verschwunden war. Daraufhin erzählt Akira ihm seine Geschichte: Auf einer seiner Reisen sah Akira Yuris Vater, den vorherigen Hüter des Glockenturms, im Sterben liegen. Er erzählte ihm, dass die Leute im Dorf der Drachengöttin Shirayuki ein Versprechen gegeben hatten: Drei Mal am Tag würden sie die Glocke läuten. Im Gegenzug sollte die Göttin dem Dorf Schutz vor der Flut gewähren. Aber die Leute vergaßen nun ihr Versprechen langsam und eine Flutwelle würde das Dorf wegspülen und alle töten, falls er versagen und die Glocke nicht weiterhin läuten würde. Sterbend bat er Akira, nach seinem Tod an seiner statt weiterzumachen. Tief berührt beschloss Akira, zusammen mit Yuri im Dorf zu bleiben. Nachdem Gauken das gehört hat, bittet er Akira, ihm den Dämonenteich zu zeigen. Gemeinsam machen sie sich auf den Weg zu Shirayuki...
'Demon Pond' ist die erste Bühneninszenierung des Kultregisseurs Takashi Miike ('Audition', 'Izo', 'Dead or Alive'). Das Theaterstück, dessen Karten bereits am ersten Tag des Vorverkaufs restlos ausverkauft waren, zeigt das 'Enfant terrible' des japanischen Kinos von einer völlig neuen Seite. 100 years ago somewhere in Japan: The inhabitants of a small village near Demon Pond are suffering from a severe drought. One evening, a man passes by the secluded house of young Akira, guardian of the local bell tower, and his wife Yuri.
The stranger reveals himself to be Gakuen, an old friend from school days who has gone in search of Akira after he disappeared without a trace a few years earlier. Akira then tells him his story: On one of his journeys, Akira saw Yuri's father, the previous keeper of the bell tower, dying. He told him that the people in the village had made a promise to the dragon goddess Shirayuki: they would ring the bell three times a day. In return, the goddess was to grant the village protection from the flood. But the people were now slowly forgetting their promise and a tidal wave would wash away the village and kill everyone if he failed and the bell did not continue to ring. Dying, he asked Akira to continue in his place after his death. Deeply touched, Akira decided to stay in the village together with Yuri. After Gauken hears this, he asks Akira to show him the Demon Pond. Together they make their way to Shirayuki...
'Demon Pond' is the first stage production by cult director Takashi Miike ('Audition', 'Izo', 'Dead or Alive'). The play, whose tickets were completely sold out on the first day of advance sales, shows the 'enfant terrible' of Japanese cinema from a completely new side. With Shinji Takeda ('Happiness of the Katakuris'), Ryuhei Matsuda ('Blue Spring') and Kenichi Endo ('Izo', 'Gozu').
