Schon als kleiner Junge ist Thomas (Thomas Godet) fest davon überzeugt, als Baby im Krankenhaus mit dem reichen Nachbarskind Alfred (Hugo Harold-Harrison) vertauscht worden zu sein. In seinen Phantasien kämpft er als Geheimagent gegen sein Schicksal an, doch im wirklichen Leben wird er Landvermesser. Noch als alter Mann hat Thomas (Michel Bouquet) das Gefühl, ein falsches Leben gelebt zu haben. Im Altersheim erwachen seine Lebensenergien ein letztes Mal, er macht sich auf, den zu suchen, der ihm vermeintlich das Leben genommen hat: Alfred (Peter Böhlke). Doch der späte Versuch, wenn auch nur für kurze Zeit das für ihn bestimmte Leben zu führen, endet ganz anders als erwartet...
In der Tradition der zur gleichen Zeit entstandenen Kultfilme 'Delikatessen' von Marc Caro und Jean-Pierre Jeunet oder 'Léolo' von Jean-Claude Lauzon springt der Film 'Toto der Held' (1991) von Regisseur Jaco van Dormael unbeschwert durch drei Zeitebenen, inszeniert abenteuerliche Visionen, ein Labyrinth aus Episoden und Erinnerungen. Jeder Schnitt ist eine visuelle Pointe, der Film eine handwerkliche Höchstleistung.

Even as a young boy, Thomas (Thomas Godet) is firmly convinced that as a baby he was swapped with the rich neighbor's child Alfred (Hugo Harold-Harrison) in the hospital. In his fantasies, he fights against his fate as a secret agent, but in real life he becomes a land surveyor. Even as an old man, Thomas (Michel Bouquet) has the feeling that he has lived a wrong life. In the old people's home, his life energies awaken one last time, he sets out to look for the one who supposedly took his life: Alfred (Peter Böhlke). But the late attempt to lead the life intended for him, even if only for a short time, ends quite differently than expected...
In the tradition of the cult films 'Delikatessen' by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet or 'Léolo' by Jean-Claude Lauzon, which were made at the same time, the film 'Toto the Hero' (1991) by director Jaco van Dormael jumps light-heartedly through three time levels, staging adventurous visions, a labyrinth of episodes and memories.
